Hello there,

Being new to the forum, I thought I'd start out with a question. The knife in question is a Benchmade Limited Edition Auto Stryker - Taurus 9130. I would like to own this knife because I'm probably going overseas because of our units soon-to-be activation. I'm in the Army National Guard and I was just curious about the laws in Dayton, Ohio... the Army, and the Army National Guard more specific.

Also, is it legal for me to purchase an automatic from Ebay? If not, how do I go about buying an automatic Benchmade? A sergeant in my unit showed me hers, and I have to have one now, :-)

Thank you,

I forgot to ask, what are the laws in Ohio (Dayton if possible) for automatics, balisongs, and fixed blades.
Also, what in general, is the max blade length for those types of knives, AND a folder as well?

Appreciate it to the utmost guys,

You will probably not be able to purchase a Benchmade auto on eBay- eBay is based in California and cannot sell autos with blades longer than two inches, and has actually cracked down on all autos. That was a few weeks ago, and a lot of listings got removed, but they're going back up now with the blade length references removed, so you might be able to find one soon.

Check out Bernard Levine for summaries of state knife laws. I believe Ohio doesn't have a restriction on possession, only on possession for sale other than to a law enforcement agency, but I do not know.

The Army, IIRC, issues Benchmade autos when it does issue autos for some reason, so you might end up with one anyway, but I don't believe it's allowed to return to the states with you, but that's just what I hear, it could be wrong.

I just lost a very cushy job over having an automatic, so my advice is to exercise great prudence in this regard- if there is any doubt about the legality of your ownership- DON'T BUY IT.

I'm enlisting in the Army National Guard ROTC-SMP option as a Pfc. in less than a week, so sometime in the next four years if it ain't over yet in God's litter box I might see you. Hooah.

Ryan -

Welcome to the forum. Glad to have you here.

I think that with your military ID (assuming you are at least 19 years old) you should be able to buy one from a dealer. If there aren't any close by you (check the Benchmade website for a list) there are a bunch of good ones using the internet for sales. I would suggest not carrying an auto while not in uniform on duty no matter what the location or state. You can get an assisted Benchmade Apparition model that is just as fast as their autos and is legal almost anywhere except perhaps California and NYC.

I appreciate your comments, and HOOAH as well Madcap. I saw a Benchmade Taurus striker (special edition 9130), that I was going to bid on - Ebay. But, it has gone up to 179 or so with a day left, and I'm sad to say it's out of my range probably.
I might bid on it still because it's brand new in box, and it looks absolutely amazing, and it would begin my collection.
The first knife I bought (of any importance) was while I was in my Advanced Individual Training in Maryland for the Army. It is a CRKT M16-13M and I love the model, and even picked up a M16-12LE for my dad (who doesn't use it, so I confiscated it, :-). But, I would really like to start with a Benchmade and move onto more of a dagger/double-edged avenue. I really like the Sogs, and I'm going to enquire about my best friend's uncle's who make the somewhat known FEHRMAN KNIVES of www.fehrmanknives.com because as I've seen them in person at their shop in SE Ohio, they are truly amazing knives.
Anyways, thanks for the comments...
