actually I felt pretty good at the end of this
.
Got a new grinder & started in yesterday. Profiled 4 blades .onto grinding. The first two went so well , I couldn't believe my luck. The third was pretty complex for me and anyway, by the wee hours of the morning I had completely screwed it up. To finish things off, I tried the fourth and simplest blade and screwed that up, too off to sleep
bright and early today I awake with an attitude (not recommended) and decide I have to make that complex blade I screwed up. Well, to make a long story short, 10 hours later and 6 failed attempts under my belt, I find my steel supply almost exhausted and my belts worn out I did manage to get one on the last try even bevels, etc.
I learned several things. First, it is going to take me a little longer to learn how to balance my right to left direction grinding with my left to right grinding. Second, I found which belts I like for the various processes. I.'m using the 3m 900 series (yellow 36 & 60) for surfacing the blanks and grinding the initial bevels. 120 grit 700 series J-flex for getting out the scratches on the flats. The new 900 series DZ belts ( I use the 180) is great for getting rid of scratches and finishing the grind before HT. I also got a feel for the process with tool steel, stainless hot rolled, cold rolled, precision ground.
I am tired, dirty , I 've run out of bandaids and the shop is a mess but I feel the two days were a success. I've got two more profiled, ground and ready to go for tomorrow. Those two simpler designs represent that last couple things I learned .that is, perhaps its better to pick up where I left off ( haven't made a knife since June) and not get too cocky .and last, I haven't had this much fun in a long time.
Take it easy, Bob
