actually – I felt pretty good at the end of this….

Got a new grinder & started in yesterday. Profiled 4 blades….onto grinding. The first two went so well , I couldn't believe my luck. The third was pretty complex for me and anyway, by the wee hours of the morning I had completely screwed it up. To finish things off, I tried the fourth and simplest blade and screwed that up, too…off to sleep

…bright and early today I awake with an attitude (not recommended) and decide I have to make that complex blade I screwed up. Well, to make a long story short, 10 hours later and 6 failed attempts under my belt, I find my steel supply almost exhausted and my belts worn out …I did manage to get one on the last try – even bevels, etc.

I learned several things. First, it is going to take me a little longer to learn how to balance my right to left direction grinding with my left to right grinding. Second, I found which belts I like for the various processes. I.'m using the 3m 900 series (yellow – 36 & 60) for surfacing the blanks and grinding the initial bevels. 120 grit 700 series J-flex for getting out the scratches on the flats. The new 900 series DZ belts ( I use the 180) is great for getting rid of scratches and finishing the grind before HT. I also got a feel for the process with tool steel, stainless hot rolled, cold rolled, precision ground.

I am tired, dirty , I 've run out of bandaids and the shop is a mess – but I feel the two days were a success. I've got two more profiled, ground and ready to go for tomorrow. Those two simpler designs represent that last couple things I learned ….that is, perhaps its better to pick up where I left off ( haven't made a knife since June) and not get too cocky….and last, I haven't had this much fun in a long time.

Take it easy, Bob

good go Bob :)
I've found if I don't feel like grinding it reflex on it greatly.
and it's not just like getting back on the bike but the
cockiness will get you and teach you a lesson you can't rush it past your ability.
when I have to fix something that's going wrong in the grind I slow it down and
go to a finer belt to gaining more control
I ground 5 Blades today one I had to just slow down I got one ground just right
took 10 min. the other one that messed up 30 min.s same design..
but having fun though... :D

You both said something that's really true - you can't have this much fun any other way, for free. :D

Some days are for grinding and some days are for doing anything else in the shop BUT grinding. I dont know why that is but it is. I have learned not to fight it either. If I start grinding and see thius aint the day for grinding i go make some thumb bobs on the lathe or go downstairs to the lunch stand and eat a sausage and drink a beer...

i use 3m yellow ceramic 50g to a norton 100g to a norton. norax x100 they say 150g i say it closer to 200g then heat treat. i think you could get by with one less belt. but you will find what works for you!

Thanks for the returns, guys. Took my time this morning getting into the shop. Relaxed, concentrated and thought of nothing but what I was doing and the lessons I learned from the previous day....cruisin'...... made three blades in two hours....off to heat treat.... Quit for the day.......& I'll have that beer regardless of what kind of a day I have!

Thanks, Bob
