Ontario Frontiersman
Does anyone have knowledge of this particular knife? I am new to this forum, and have had my eye on this knife for a while. Appears to be a good fixed long bladed knife, with an inexpensive price tag. I've found them on sale on 1SKS for $40.oo. The blade is slightly over 11 inches long and 3/16" thick. A longstanding forum member (who goes by the nickname Silat on IRC not sure about here) has handled one of these and he said it was a good blade, good feel, good handling.
Anyone else have 1st hand knowledge of this knife ? I am either going to buy this one, or a coldsteel peacekeeper (I have a peacekeeper 2, want a knife now with a longer blade), unless someone here has some better suggestions.

Thanx

Heck, buy the knife. I've got several Ontario blades ,some just for fun, and they
always do a great job for the money. Most just get the snot beat out of them in
the field. Wouldn't use a more expensive blade that way and they still work as
expected. Good cheap stuff for daily use .

At the Northwest Knife Collectors Tacoma knife-show a couple of shows ago, I looked at 4-5 samples of the Ontario Frontiersman, but couldn't find ONE that had even grinds on it, and a couple of them were WAY out of "spec", with both un-even, AND very "wavy" grind-lines. If you plan on buying one "sight un-seen", ask whoever you are buying from to inspect it for you.

Aside from the grind problems, it looks to be a very good "fighter" for the money.

My Frontiersman also has an uneven grind on the clip, but its still not bad for the money. Feels very light in the hand, just wish it had a metal guard.

What kind of guard does it have ? I can buy a ColdSTEEL PEACEMAKER 2nd (they normally have a miniscule flaw that is almost impossible to find) for a few dollars more, would this be better to buy ? I did want the longer blade of the Frontiersman, though. Does this uneven grinding make it hard to sharpen ?

Billy Ray, All the Ontario spec plus line have a rubber handle / guard setup due
to cost reasons and it works really well. As to the grind lines and some of the other
fine points just remember.....these are price knives made to work. They are absolutly
a first rate way to learn about knives while not spending a fortune doing it. When
I buy a new Ontario blade it goes out the shop for "My" edge to put on it as ALL
knives will eventually have their owners edge in time. I just speed it up a bit. Then
I use them hard. Like I said , Buy the knife and enjoy it. It wouldn't cost next month's
rent money.

My frontiersman has been great. I've taken it out hiking and hacked away at trees of differing hardnes and the the blade held up pretty well. Like everybody said before, the Ontario knives are great for everyday use and are priced for affordability. I myself usually get a few at a time and use them for all practical purposes.
