Newbie? I have been lurking around for a week or so reading the differen post regarding type and style of field kives that others carrie into the field. I have decided to purchase a USAF style knife, but was wondering what you experts would recomend the ontario or camillus. and also leather handle vs a rubber style i.e. the ontario. Also anyother opinions on other knives would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Colt

Hi Colt,

Welcome aboard. I hope you will take an active role in the forum...

Having been a USAF Survival Instructor, I used the USAF Survival knife for many years. I didn't know there was more than one. Can you provide a link to a page that shows the two knives? I issue the AF survival knife to students to use...should they need one during training. It is cheap and takes a beating (don't get me wrong...there are better knives out there... but this is a good fixed blade knife to START with).

My openion...:>)

Given both knives are made to the same military spec. they are very close in quality. Camillus made most of the pilot survivals used in Vietnam including the knife I was issued in the Rangers. I tend to favor them just for tradition.

Having talked at length with the Camillus folks, I would go for theirs due to the fact that they have a very state of the art heat treating facilitly. Not saying that Ontario dosent though. Ask Phil Gibbs in the Camillus forum and see what he says.

Steven, what did you think of that Whitetail?

I think I'm qualified to answer this question!

I've owned ALL THREE that have been mentioned!

I currently still have the Camillus and the Leather Washer Handled Ontario. I traded the "rubber" handled Ontario for the leather Ontario.

I find the Camillus sharpens better and holds an edge somewhat nicer than the Ontario. Sorry I can't get more technical with my description than that...

The Camillus blade treatment MUST have something to do with what I'm trying to say. Refer to Rob's post on that!

As to the reason I traded the 'rubber' handle for the leather-
1) Solid pommel for pounding!
2) HANDGUARD!!! The rubber one doesn't have one and it was slippery when WET!
3)The rubber handle was SOFT especially on the pommel end and the finger guard where it projected from the tang.

So from an owner of all three, go with the Camillus!

Good luck!
