I have opinel brand folders and find them to be quite satisfactory, but have not owned any of their fixed blades. Are they of comparable quality(with the exception of gimmicky things like the finger ring)

I have a set of Opinel kitchen knives - wooden handles multiple colors - they are not comparable to the classic folders IMHO. I don't recall the type of steel though I believe they were not made in China. I bought these directly from Opinel. They are very thin and flexible blades that in my experience are difficult to sharpen and don't hold an edge very well. Will cut bananas and serve OK as steak knives. Pretty colors.

Having said all that I spent less than $ 30.00 for 4 knives. I definitely got that value, though
I hoped for a bit better ;)

I have two of Opinel #102 carbon steel paring knives. very thin, ok edge, very light. 2 'classic' style paring knives for $25 is pretty good.

My wife swears by a Opinel bread knife. To quote her, leave it to the French to design the perfect bread slicer.

I have some of their carbon steel paring knives, and I think they are great.
