Opinions needed. What is this one?

OK, I was going through a box full of 110's and ran across this one. As is typical a lot of the time, I have no idea where or when I aquired it or even what it is for sure.

It "may" be from the custom shop, it has a "Buck-Anvil-Custom-USA" stamped satin blade but no "Designers Choice" stamp on the other side like all my other 420HC custom blades have. The handle material isn't a laminate and I think it's a dark walnut, but I'm not sure. Any and all opinions or information would be appreciated.

Dave, I don't know. Didn't Buck start using the anvil stamp in 2002? DM

Yes, the anvil was first used in 2002 as the 100th anniversary date stamp. It's still used (along with "Custom") on the blades from the custom shop and on limited editions.
That makes mine no older than 2002 but it could be much newer than that. I suppose it could be some kind of limited edition or special projects knife.

Dave, That's to funny. Your computer literate, since you can't keep up with what you got:rolleyes:, you should keep a log on the computer, as to what it is what, you paid, etc, etc.:)

You sure do take a good picture, Dave. That is a real nice looking knife. I like pins but that looks real good without.

I wonder if it's a walnut handled 110 with n/s bolsters from the Custom Shop? Good looking 110 Dave.

Yeah, I know. It something I really need to do.

Thanks.

That's what I was thinking too, but not having the "Designer's Choice" stamp confuses the issue. I don't know when they started putting that on the blades.

I'm thinking there was a run of 50 some time back for someone that I don't remember. They were sold on the bay??? How's that for helpful...

It sure looks like ebony, doesn't it? The grain is very similar to some old 110s I have.

Nice wood, whatever it is.

Okay, here's my two cents: That knife was rehandled after it left the custom shop. The glue lines are pretty noticeable and not up to Custom Shop standards IMO. The wood looks like some cocobolo I bought from Texas Knifemaker's Supply years ago. I think I still have a set in the shop drawer. A lot of coco has some deep colors but I think that's the central american variety. If memory serves me the coco I bought from TKS came out of Brazil. Here is an early project knife of mine with some of that Brazilian coco. The texture is also similar to Dave's knife.

I think you hit on something there G! The wood in mine sure resembles yours. Do you know when they started putting "Designers Choice" on the blade? Or perhaps this is a rehandled LE?

Very similar wood. Your grain is a little wavy while Dave's is very straight. Neither look like the usual coco that we see on other knives in recent days.

Does yours have the tiny grain fissures that Dave's has? We'd need a closer view to see that.

Seems like a good guess that "Designer's Choice" came into being at about this time.
