Osage handles

I'm almost done rehanging my little baby ;)(read 10" 8# hewing axe) in osage as the maple handle I tried shattered in my hands without warning and was looking for a little advice from those who have used Osage to make handles or use an osage hung axe. Will tung oil (to bring out some character and chatoyance) be acceptable for the axe, or will it affect the slide (I'm assuming not)?

With the maple handle I just barely wiped some on to show the birds eye (that type was a big mistake) and it was fine but I'll be finishing this one more completely before playing. I understand that the osage will not take much iol due to the properties of the wood, but want to give it a bit more shine.

BTW this is the hardest wood I've hung an axe with- after profiling I've had to scrape wood off as this is much more effective in preventing tear out than trying to whittle the handle. It is the first thing I've made out of osage (I only learned about it on BF)and it is very interesting to use.

Thanks.

Thanks- I bought this from a wood dealer and have had it for months so I hope it is dry enough, but if it breaks I'm only out time and the remaining handle gets turned into knives.
