some heathens. Not so much offended as they are "leery" of it.
well, it has to do a lot with the Whole Neo-National Socialism movement and the KKK. A lot of those groups use symbols or have used symbols in the past that were sacred to the folk. The term "Aryan" is (mis)appropriated and (mis)used along with all this other stuff to mean some form of master race or something. As has been stated before, the term has little to do with Blond haried blue eyed folks. There are some hate groups and white supremists who call themselves Aryan Nation and such.
You figure, the Sig rune is a sign for the sun, for victory. put two of those together and ya have the infamous logo of the SS.
The venerable tiw rune was incorporated by the Nazis into the Hitler Youth uniform and insignia.
The Anti-Defamation League sums it up nicely in their symbols database:
"Nazi Germany glorified an idealized "Aryan/Norse" heritage, consequently extremists have appropriated many symbols from pre-Christian Europe for their own uses. They give such symbols a racist significance, even though the symbols did not originally have such meaning and are often used by nonracists today, especially practitioners of modern pagan religions."
--and this--
"While not by nature a racist religion, Odinism is popular among white supremacists because its Old Norse origins are seen as representative of Aryan heritage and cultural pride. These symbols were common within Norse and ancient Germanic cultures and were later adopted by the Nazis for this reason."
--also--
"Although its traditional origins are nonracist, the Thor's Hammer symbol was adopted by neo-Nazis and other white supremacists, especially racist practitioners of Odinism, a neo-pagan religion related to Ásatrú. Today, the symbol is displayed by many white supremacists in the form of jewelry, tattoos, and clothing, because they believe that Thor's Hammer signifies the strength and purity of the "Aryan race." Anyhow, most of these groups are somehow Christian, yet use pagan and heathen symbols to push their load-o-crap on the masses.
