OT: Crows...

I wonder why scientists are so surprised when an animal uses an object as a tool.

You should see the things my cat comes up with...

the interesting thing is that the crow not only used an object as a tool but actually fashioned the object into a tool....

what things does your cat come up with? I knew of a cat that learned to ring doorbells ;)

Well, let's see...

He taught himself how to pee in the toilet...
One day, at about 4 o'clock in the morning, I heard this sound in teh house. I grabbed a knife and headed for the kitchen (just like out of the movies). I was so scared, but so ready to do some damage. I walked past the bathroom and heard the noise again, but it was a suspiciously familiar sound this time...;) Long story short, I didn't have to hurt nobody and the cat has been peeing in the toilet since (this was back in '96, long before "Meet the Parents"...)

I know most people hate 'em, but I've been fascinated by crows ever since one dropped a long wing feather on me. Cats can be clever too - I have to respect any animal that can make people do what THEY want.

Neat topic. Crows and ravens are amazing birds. I can sit and watch them for hours.

If anyone is interested in reading about ravens, try "Mind of the Raven" and "Ravens in Winter" by Bernd Heinrich.

Great birds, crows. Have liked and respected them for years.
A tip to attract them to you (hopefully to observe and not kill) is to rub a piece of dampened polystyrene packing on a glass bottle to make a high pitched squeek. Apparently sounds like a crow in distress and gets 'em interested. I tried it and managed to get 7 or 8 perched on the roof opposite us.

Jeff.
