Hi everyone,
Well, it was an interesting day at work yesterday. Since I haven't had a chance to talk to anyone in a while, I thought I'd share with the board. ...
I was running around Western SD chasing grass fires for my paper yesterday, when I got a call to get my butt to Deadwood. A huge T-storm cell had moved through the area, and hit DW with 1" of water in a half hour!
Normally that wouldn't be TOO big a deal, but with all the damage from our recent Grizzly Gulch Fire, it caused one heck of a flash flood, mudslide. A 2' wall of water/mud/ash swept down from the surrounding hills and made Thursday night in Deadwood rather memoriable for the town.
To add to the mix, we are right in the thick of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which adds approx. 500,000 more people to the area.
I got to Deadwood too late to get much photo wise (for the life of me, I don't know why my Editor had me chasing fires as far East as Wall. .. but I made the 100 mile trip in just two hours. Not bad with all the bike traffic and fighting my way through one hell of a T-Storm).
Here is a photo (not mine) from our front page:
(Caption: Deadwood tourists rush Thursday afternoon to lift a fallen motorcycle from flash-flood water blackened with debris and ash from a recent forest fire. The flood waters reached thresholds of casinos and offices on Sherman Street. (Photo by Mary Dunne))
Thankfully there wasn't too much damage, and no injuries. One house had 3' of water run through it, and a pickup truck was washed over a cliff. ... but the hospital didn't get damaged (built up against a large hill that was burned clean during the fire).
Anyway, thanks for listening.
Later,
Alan
