Afghanistan used to have two of the largest, and oldest, Buddhist statues in the world. They were carved in the cliffs of Bamiyan back in the 4th or 5th century, and the tallest of the two stood 175 feet tall. The Taliban, in their religious zeal, destroyed these precious relics with dynamite. Today, I was able to get my hands on a fragment of the large statue of Buddha, thanks to an aquaintance who passed by that way on an operation. It's not very big, maybe a little bigger than a walnut, but I'm still thinking it would make a good gift for a good guy.
