I must be getting sloppy in my old age because today I started the belt after a belt change and stood right in front of it as I pushed the button. Catastrophic belt failure on startup, no warning at all, I got slapped about as hard as I ever have by the shredding belt.

When you start up after changing belts NEVER stand directly in front of the belt. It can HURT. Stand slightly off to one side for a second or so. Changing the belt could weaken one side of the belt, it could shred and slap you silly.

Hey George...

Dang..
Hope you are OK...

Sounds like there is some room for improvement on a Grinder....

An invention maybe for a safety feature on these Beasts...

I've had an idea for something like this for quite sometime,, but not quite sure how to do it...

Are you talking about the belt letting go completely or just partial failure and you get slapped by the part that ripped ?

Need something deep inside the guard that when a belt rips partially it will finish the job by completely destroying the belt..

A knife of sorts like on a weed whacker that trims off the excess line....

$hit ,,there goes and patent potential....

Hope it wasn't a 36gt or something really nasty. The switch on my grinder is off to the left side and because I'm right handed I always step over to turn things on.
Also always wear a hat, goggles, resperator and leather apron. I keep as mutch skin as possible covered when I'm grinding.
I have been lucky so far and only have had compleat belt failure 3 or 4 times and all but one was warned by the chatter and vibration.
Hope you didn't sustain any serious damage.

Like many people I was beat up once by a grinding belt breaking. I put a guard to deflect the belt down over my top wheel. Now the belts hit the guard instead of flying into my face and chest like a bullwhip.

yeah, you know your alive after that happens.i was leaning a 50grit way ooover when the blade edge caught on one side the partial knocked my cap off and i got nailed a few more times before i got the great idea to turn the machine off and get my face out of there.

The strip that came halfway off acted like a bullwhip and snapped exactly where my spare tire was, didn't damage the shirt but left me with a large red welt. I guess it scared me more than anything else but it sure did sting for a while.

This was a freak accident that was going to happen guard or not. I probably weakened the belt running it over the edge of the wheel and it separated when the power was applied. Like I said I should not have been standing in front of the belt when I pushed the button.
