Out of business

If a knife company ran out of business completely, where would I get my knife repaired? Are there any signs that a knife company will go under? Could discontinuing every model be a sign? Thanks.

corbon, is this just a question for the sake of asking a question, or have you heard anything about a real knife company in trouble? :)

Of course, if someone goes out of business, and no other company buys the name and rights to the line, that's it, there's no one left to stand behind the warrantee.

Depending on what's involved, there are people who are pretty good at fixing broken knives, so ask around.

So please tell us if you know of a company that has discontinued all of it's models. I would think that was a pretty good sign that they were closing down, especially if they did not announce that there would be new models introduced soon.

I respectfully disagree. The answer to that question (even if hypothetical) might be helpful to someone in the future. And, IMHO, preferable to starting yet another "...so what are you carrying TODAY?..." thread.

I've thought of this often myself. Especially for the smaller shops, and custom makers, that you would imagine would want to retire at some point.

I've often thought that with all of the talented custom makers on these forums alone repairs to durn near anything would never be impossible. Now they might be a bit expensive... ;)

I agree totally...as long as you are talking about your own "non contribution" to this thread.

Corbon, OTOH has an excellent question. I bought one of the EDI Genesis knives, and after a short while, the lock was not right. I tried to get an address to send it back and found them out of business. The seller took care of it with an exchange though. Keep in mind some companies, like Spyderco for example. They discontinue models like fish. They also bring out more new models and materials then any company I know of. Usually, discontinuing is not a going out of business thing. Possibly a sign of growth. If they go for real, there will be little or no warning, in my limited expereience.
