Pacific Cutlery Bali-Song Questions

A friend wants to sell me a Balisong. It was made by the Pacific Corporation of Japan in 1985. It says "International Series" on the blade, it also has a butterfly design with the words "Bali-Song" on it that looks suspiciously like the Benchmade logo. It has black skeltonized aluminum handles, and a single edged drop point blade. The blade measures about 4", the knife is about 9 1/4" long when open and 5 1/4" long when closed. It also features the tradition latch mechanism.

My questions are:

1) Was Benchmade previously know as Pacific Cutlery?

2) Were these knives well made?

3) What are they worth in good condition?

4) Are Bali-Songs even legal in the People's Republic of Kalifornia?

5) Any addition info someone might have as to blade steel, model name, years made, etc., would be much appreciated.

Will I ever have enough money for a digital camera?

You'd probably get better responses in the bali forum. All I can tell you is that Pacific Cutlery did preded Benchmade and only 2" blades or less are allowed on balis in California, but I'm not sure if that's carry or ownership. Hope this helps a little.

Sounds like economy ones they came out with a few years ago. They weren't made by Pacific Cutlery, though. Benchmade made 'em. Mirror finish blade with an unsharpened false edge wee hawk. Handles were Zamak and cast. Really floppy latch but it worked well in open and closed position. I have one in silver chrome finished handles and they were pretty cheap. Under $30 U.S. when they first came out. Good luck if you want to acquire it. It's better than a Jaguar, from what I can glean on the balisong homepages. Somewhat collectable because Benchmade never brought the quality of balis down the that low a level again.

I have one, different handle (chromed)

1) Was Benchmade previously know as Pacific Cutlery? Yes and No. Les De Asis was and is the owner of PC and Benchmade

2) Were these knives well made? Yes for 25$ MSRP. good blade, poor zamak handle. But Eric can do a superb rehandle for you: www.maierblades.com. He is also a forumite.

3) What are they worth in good condition? Not sure, check www.balisongcollector.com, go into market watch. Chuck (web owner) is moderator of Balisong forum here.

4) Are Bali-Songs even legal in the People's Republic of Kalifornia? Not sure

5) Any addition info someone might have as to blade steel, model name, years made, etc., would be much appreciated.
PC International series, imported from Japan, branding: Pacific Cutlery
440C Steel (at least that's what advertised. Some peole doubt it though)
Model: can't remember. You need to check Imada's Advanced Balisong Manual book .. it's there

Mirror polished blades are from Benchmade (made in USA), same concept and handle material, only better finishing.

What amount is your friend offering this balisong to your for?
$50. Like I said the blade is clearly marked Pacific Cutlery, Japan, 1985 so I doubt it's a low end Benchmade. Sounds like the dang thing is considered an assault weapon here in Kalifornia, so I may pass. Bummer.

Yeah, one bad thing is its latch is pretty much worthless in the closed position. Works fine locking the knife in the open position, though.

Thanks for all the info, guys.

I would recomend you to post this question in Balisong Forum; you never know when an ordinary cheap looking Bali could be a coveted item for collectors. I have heard those things happen alot with Balis.

Follow our advice and post it there; you lose nothing and could win someting. Ask for Chuck Gollnick advice (he is The Balisong Collector; and trust me, he knows really a lot about Balis); he's a moderator of the forum an always is looking for this sort of things and also he's glad to help in regards of Balis and Bali-newbies.

Ragards.
