Two amazing steel sculptures from the one and only Wolfgang Loerchner.
“Calla Lily” (2002) on the left and "Wings" (2008) on the right.

This is a page from my next book, as I have finished Tim Hancock's book
and it goes to print next month...
It will be the opening full page illustration to the introduction in my 7th
book on modern custom knives "Knife Art Treasures", planned for 2010.

All the best,

David,

Very cool knives ...... I love the flow of them. Wolfgang is coming to Milan in a months time and I hope to see some of his knives in the flesh.

Marcel

just when I started wondering about where you were at, David, you resurface with some sweet pictures of some amazing art knives!
Thank you very much!:)

Hi Marcel,

From my experience, Wolfgang seldom has more than one knife at a show and
even then it is a delivery to a client.... But maybe now that he has retired
and turned (at last) full time knifemaker, he may even have one or two for sale!!!

At the 2002 Milan show he created quite a stir when he presented me
with "Calla Lily", the knife he made for my first book, "Custom Folding knives".

Lorien,
I have been head down checking every letter in Tim Hancock's book.
I shall go on checking and re-checking for another couple of weeks,
then of goes the DVD to the printing house...

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Wolf's knives never cease to amaze. Beautiful knives, beautifully photographed.
Really looking forward to both upcoming books.

Wolfgang does his truly amazing sculptured knives using no power tools
whatsoever! He does have a hand drill though, that he uses when doing folders.....

Shown here are some of the wooden tools he makes for specific sanding and
polishing tasks. He also uses hundreds of files to create his flowing deeply
sculpted designs in steel.

All the best,
David Darom (ddd)

Those are definitely "art" knives. The lines and flow are as distinctive as finger prints.

I would imagine that a serious number of hours goes into creating each knife. Especially without the aid of power tools.

Thanks for posting them.

Thanks for including some of his home made sanding tools. I'm most interested in how he does things with minimal equipment. More More.

Here is a composite illustration I created from 5 sequence of pictures that
Wolfgang Loerchner took depicting several stages in the making "Calla Lily" in 2002.
He bagan with a slab of 416 stainless steel...
