Hey I just have a silly question in regards to kydex. Does Kydex take paint well? I was thinking about getting some sheaths whipped up and sent out to a friend of mine to go nuts with a pinstriping brush.

So I guess that the best question is, what do I have to do to prep for painting, let alone, does kydex take paint at all?

I would think it is a poor idea if you have any intention of carrying it. If it is gonna sit in a display box, go for it. Definately need some type of primer. I would think automotive paint would be your best chance??

I've used the Krylon spray paint for plastics on Kydex with excellent results. Minor wear over time but easily fixed with a respray. You can also purchase Duracoat spray coatings. They work well also.

Ken is right the pic below was painted and carried almost every day for 6 months.
I used Krylon Fusion Camouflage green, prep was a through cleaning with mineral spirits, paint was applied in 3 coats with an hour in between each coat.
10 hours later I applied 1 light coat of Krylon Matte clear and let dry.
As can be seen there is light wear but I was amazed at the durability of the paint once dried.

That's the stuff! Krylon forumlated that particular paint for plastics and resins (like your patio chairs). It works great and has no problem with adherence.

Fusion is iffy. Flat colors do better than glossy. Some colors like to peel off with a mean stare. The camo colors seem to do the best.

Here's one I did in Fusion (airbrush) quite a ways back and it turned out well. I've had others act like they were still wet after a year.

I have never tried anything glossy, thanks for the info Kiah, everything has been ultra flat with good results.
I had wondered where that pattern Kydex had come from.
