I have the passaound done for my part and Tom Moro engraving on the bolsters. Next Im supposed to send it to sweden for scrimshaw on the handle. I have two things bothering me. One: The ivory is not white, its dark tan and shows grain. Im not sure how scrim would look on dark tan. Two: It has to go to Sweden and will take from 2 to 6 months turnaround time. Can we wait that long and do we really want to send it out of the USA?

Opinions please, I hate decisions.

You know more about scrimshanding than I do Bruce, if you don't think the ivory is clear enough for it then don't go with it. Doesn't Jens Anso live overseas?? He offered to do the sheath so I guess send it to him next. I don't think it would take long to get it back. Just gotta be sure to insure it for a couple grand and get the papers filled out right.

check with customs before you post ivory. some countries have bans on ivory you don't want some do-gooder in the post snaching your knife for the government to destroy.

I do like a good scrimshaw there is a local in western australia. We
have bans on ivory imports here the only ivory getting used on knives here is the tusk from under grandad's bed or similar.

Bruce if it's pre-ban Ivory it's going to be a NO NO to
export/import. bill it as Mastodon, you may know that anyway...
:(

Quite frankly I would not send it across the border. Most countries have a grab it now and you prove it's legal in my country approach. In the USA is fairly easy to get ivory, both legal and illegal. Most countries know that and take a dim view of any imports across their lines. Just my .02

Bruce,

If you are worried about the ivory then take it to the Montana show with you and have a couple of the Scrimshanders there give you their opinion. I seen some very nice work there last year.

Bill

It is mammoth ivory. I am just not wanting to send it out of the country. I hear lots of horror stories about postmen opening packages. Since Sept 11 the mail get x-rayed. My gut feeling says keep it in the good old USA. If Ansoknives is overseas I want to get Sandy to make the sheath. Any opposiyion to this idea?

I can take it to the Montana show and show it off. There are some great scrimshanders there but they may not want to donate their talents. I can always ask them.

Bruce B is right. They will open the parcel no matter what is written on it - they even open the envelope of my copy of BLADE every month. It has also something to do with VAT. Everything imported from outside the EU is checked to see how much VAT the receiver has to pay. Since Jens hasn't bought that knife, this shouldn't be a problem but as Bruce said: what if the guy who opens it, really likes what he sees ?
We've all heard stories about things disappering during shipment, but you never hear about the ones who make it, and that must be quite a lot more. Things don't have to cross a border to get stolen.

I have been on this project since day one.......I think it is bull to have second thought now....but if you don´t wanna send it over....:p

edited to add this....I send 3-5 knives to the US every week...I get stuff from the US very often. NEVER did I have any probs...

I have a piece of alligator ready to ship. I was going to ship it to Jens on Monday but will wait to find out where the bowie is going. Thanks.

Marcel

I have had emails from Jens and I think we should send it to him. He has been here with the rest of us and he says he never has troubles with shipments. Lets have a momment of silent prayer.

Marcel, send the gator to me and I will include it in the package. It will save you frieght expense too.

Bruce:

I will try to send it on Tuesday morning. The package I shipped to you last week should arrive in a day or so. The other should reach you by end of week. Thanks.

Marcel

For what my opinion is worth I think it would be extremely unfair to exclude Jens just because he lives elsewhere. As he said, he's been in on this from early on, and he's more than qualified for his part.
How's it looking now, by the way?

Marcel, Thanks I got the gator yesterday. Nice piece too!:) Send the sheath gator asap and I will put it with the knife. It would be best to put it in the same package because it is a "repair job" to help prevent any import and/or post-office duty costs.

Osbourn, it looks good! Thats why Im so worried.

Hi guys... A suggestion re shipping to Sweden. Contact your Congressman's office and explain the purpose (charitable) of the Bowie
and your concerns regarding shipping. Request their assistance in sending it by gov't courier. If you get no favourable response there
contact the Swedish Consulate in the U.S. They will probably be more than happy to assist. Play up the charitable aspect as well as the international co-operation aspect.
I know I don't have anything to do with the Pass-around Bowie but it seems rather petty to change the rules this close to the completion and cut out a non-American if the delivery/return concerns can be worked out. I, like all the other "Foreign" members of this forum relly appreciate all the help you Yanks provide here and only wish my level of expertise was sufficient to allow me to contribute more substantially.
P.S. Don't get me wrong I am not for a moment suggesting there was any anti-foreign intent regarding work on the Bowie just a well founded concern re:loss/seizure during shipping.

Kraut

Also please accept my apologies as I mistakenly said Sweden when I see from Anso's Address he is in Denmark

I just got the bowie along with a nice piece of alligatorskin. I will let you know how the sheath comes out. Alitle busy the next weeks but will try and have it done soon.
