Well, I just had to take home a nice little BM 720SBTRT I ran into today. Damn thing just felt right. I'm not a knifenut (tm) though I do have a busse badger that looked lonely at the show one weekend last year.

I ordered a small bottle of Milspec 1 and their little screwdriver kit. Wondering if there are any suggestions for a first time owner of a BM folder.

Thanks much,

-dave

I would suggest a Spyderco Tri-Angle Sharpmaker [#204], and a Tuf-Cloth.

Keep away from Vampire Gerbil.....

And stop by the Camillus Forum when you get bored:)

Welcome aboard!

pst...its militec 1...it'll just be our secret. Welcome aboard. You might not be a knut now but give it a week.

Welcome to the Forums!

BM makes a nice, little driver set that contains all the drivers used on their knives. Quality is so-so, but it's handy. For better quality try www.wihatools.com

BTW, a nice selection for your first quality blade.:)

Thanks for the advice folks.

Two positive events so far:

(1) I have ordered the Sharpmaker. I will endeavor to learn how to sharpen knives now. I heard mention of a knife sharpening faq somewhere, I'll go look for it.

(2) I [annoying to wife] practiced for a few hours last night, while watching Band of Brothers, opening & closing my new knife, and I still have 10 fingers this morning. Woo hoo!

Hey Dave, congrats and welcome aboard.

One tip. Many people say that militec-1 bonds to the metal when the metal is heated before application. If you use a hairdrier on the metal for a while to get the metal relatively hot, then apply the militec, it is supposed to work better. I have done this and found that it does indeed seem to lube better. Not sure of the mechanism involved with this, but I believe that Militec-1 was originally developed as an oil-additive to work in engines that obviously run much hotter than the temps knives generally are subjected to. Also, it may not seem to work good at first, but after repeated applications over the course of using the knife, you will start to notice the difference.

I'll also ditto on the Tuf-Cloth suggestion. Better yet, get the Tuf-Glide as well if you can afford them. Otherwise, Militec-1 should protect fine for the time being.

I agree...and the Benchmade is pretty nice, too. That pair covers alot of bases. Great choices.

Yer off to a good start, now just keep it that way!!!

Ditto tuff cloth, sharpmaker, and miltec. You won't go wrong down that road. The shaprmaker is easy to learn, and there is a video included that helps you out. You can even use it as a bench stone to learn those skills.

At the top of this page there is a FAQ link. Scroll to the bottom of the FAQ intro page for a quick link to the sharpening FAQ.
