what were the differences between the older pc models 401-404 and the not so old benchmade 44 45 including other benchmade models made around the same time? Is one of higher quality?

The PC 400 series had the stainless milled handles that started out as 5/8" stock and 3/16" blades. The BM 44,45, and 48 had cast stainless handles about 3/8" thick (just like the new ti handles on the 42,43, and 47) and 1/8" blade stock. Two totally different knives; the PC's were about 4 times more money than the 44, 45, etc...

Actually on the 403 in my possession, the handles are not milled. There is still casting marks in the channels (it's missing that famous micro grooves that milled handles have come to be ID'd with). And the blade isn't Jody Samson ground, and looks to be CNC'd, but is still 3/16" in thickness. The weight of the 403 is identical to that of the Custom line, including (I suspect) using the same latch in it's construction. The 44/45's are very close in dimension to the new BM T1 series. The handle is just a little, because it's missing the latch gate, and it weighs a little more.

I'd give the 400's the edge in quality and construction.
