I have a two hard drives which are flaking out on this computer. I am currently booting and running on a hard drive image disk.

What applications or software tools are recommended for managing hard drive partitions and doing backups?

I was thinking about the Symantec products (Ghost and Partition Magic) but, the reviews on them are aweful in general. Who else should I look for?

I am using a Pentium 4 2.2Ghz 1Mb RAM computer with SCSI 160 and ATA 133 IDE hard drives under Windows XP professional.

Thanks!

A really really easy image program to use is Acronis True Image. I use it regularly for backups and have used it to restore a HDD before.

I have also used Powerquest's Partition Magic and can recommend that. It is also very user-friendly, if I remember correctly. Haven't needed to use it in a while. Don't know if it's the same title as Symantec's Partition Magic...

You might also want to consider a good defrag utility. I use Raxco's PerfectDisk with good results.

Just looked on Google and it seems as if Symantec bought out PowerQuest a while back.

Not sure why Partition Magic got such awful reviews that you've found. I have personally been satisfied with it, but I've never asked that much of it. I also don't have any experience with any other partitioning software *shrug*
