Here is the long-awaited comparison.
***you may need to maximize your browser***

The 1st drawing is the Original simplified design. I had removed all of the fancy handle work, etc. to see if the size and shape would turn out ok.

The 2nd drawing is the Wood Model. I imported a scan and drew this in CAD. The relative size is the best I could do, but not perfect. You can see that DaveK did an outstanding job. The buttcap is a little smaller and the belly of the blade is longer (shorter recurve). Dave had actually copied the spine curve exactly, and I flattened it out to make it more "manly".

The 3rd drawing is the actual Pen Knife. Again, this is drawn in CAD from a photograph by Uncle Bill. Bura has relaxed the butt of the handle even more to make it more "straight". The handle carving is "standard HI". The cho is located farther from the bolster. The handle overall is a little smaller than the wood model. That made it easier to hold. However, the angle of the butt makes the top of it dig into my hand more. The wedge in the handle carving sits on my third finger instead of between fingers and makes for constant position changing while being used. Also, the recurve is too close to the handle. I think that's why Sarge said it didn't do well as a chopper. The effective leverage is too short because the recurve is not far enough out, and that's where most of my hits landed.

The 4th drawing is a proposed 2nd run. The handle is a bit longer, but the same diameter as the actual knife. The butt cap is turned to provide palm relief as well as giving a "pinky-hook". This should make it super grippy and allow for more precision and control. Also added are the handle carvings and blade etching. The recurve is located farther from the handle to improve chopping ability. The width of the blade between the handle and the recurve is also lessened to lower weight and give it more "swing" - like a light baseball bat with a heavy tip. The blade thickness will be 5/16".

I would like to get everyone's input on the new design. I plan on making a full wood model including the karda and chakma. The cost will be higher, but it should turn out very nice...perhaps a lil' brother to the YCS.

This will be a limited run and you will have to prepay $50 upfront to be on The List. The rest will be collected when it comes in. The reason for this is to get a definite list to save Uncle headaches as well as ensure quality in the production.

Please add your input in this thread.

Hi, Pen, and all owners of the first run:

I could easily make the cosmetic changes to the Pen knife, such as handle carving and blade etching. That would bring the first run cosmetically up to spec.

If there is reluctance on the part of the kamis to do the cosmetic etch and carving, I could also do the second run's cosmetic changes, too.

I've got examples of my work. If anyone is interested, lemme know. I have 2 CDs full of images of my work...Also there were some threads (Archived now? can't find them) of my work on HI khuks, plus some other stuff.

So, is this a new knife (v2) and it will cost more than the first, or is it the second run of the Pen v1 and it will cost more do to changes? If it's new, will the old v1 still be available at the old price?

Keith = How much do you think adding the engraving and etching shown would cost? shoot me an email: dan@pendentive.biz

SharpBits - this will be a replacement. The first series was only meant as a basic version. However, depending on the everyone's input, I am open to making another run of the plain version.

Looks like it's going to be another run of the same model. Carving/Etching will be extra and not offered by HI.

cost = $100. Prepay/Deposit Only.

Bill = how many takers do we need this time?

SharpBits, et al = Send me an email once you've prepaid so that I can keep track of how many are needed.

Email sent. We can talk at your convenience. I have jpegs of some of my work if you need to see some horn, bone, or antler work I've previously done.

I may need to pass on this run of the Pen. This isn't going to gum up the works for others, is it?

I'll sign up. It would be nice to have a little one, and the shape really speaks to me. Of course, it'll be shear torture to have it delivered home back in the states, where I won't be able to see it for about three more months, but it looks to be worth waiting for.
