Persian: Too Stiff

Okay, I got my Chinook II (which I love:thumbup: ) and my Persian (full size) today from NewGraham.

I like everything about the Persian (even the Micarta handles which I thought might feel too slippery) except opening and closing the thing. Opening requires more effort than any folder I've handled (even the Ayoob) and closing requires me to use two hands which I have to do carefully.

Will the action loosen up a bit with more use or is this the way its going to be?

I knew it might would require more effort to open and close compared to other Spydies but this might be more than I'm comfortable with.

Clean out the inside components of the knife with very hot water(WD40 works as well), dry it out with compressed air or a blowdryer, and than relubricate your knife with your lube of choice.

Pop a movie into the VHS/DVD player, and start opening and closing your Persian. By the end the movie, your knife will open buttery smooth.

It'll break in over time, but that's the quick way;)

I can imagine cutting myself pretty badly if I'm not paying attention. But I'm glad to hear it can loosen up.

Well then I might suggest getting a chic flick and sharing the time with your wife/spouse/girlfriend/significant other and since you will be bored to tears you will pay attention to the knife...:D Conversely action flick for hubby etc...:p

Doing it two handed may be a little safer for this scenario, and it helps with the closing, since it's stiff to start with.

It'll smooth up quite nicely with use. Both my Persian and mini-Persian are very smooth now.

Here's Mr. Schempp's advice off of Spyderco's forum. It pertains to the Kris but some of the comments would also apply to the Persian line:

Pretune your knife

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I appreciate your comments on the Kris. here are some suggestions for more enjoyment from the knife.

I have noticed the feel of a little grit in the Moki made knives. I flush with WD 40 and work the mechanism. I then blow out with compressed air. Then I relube with a good synthetic oil or grease. I work the mechanism and then blow the synthetic into the pivot area and then remove the excess oil. After a week or two in the pocket the knife works much better than out of the box. As the knife smooths out the hole size is less of an issue; and more appropriate in size for the much reduced force necessary to operate the knife.

I generally release the lock and flip the blade down to where it bumps my index finger to close the knife. It is important to have your index finger close to the guard for this process to be safe.

The waves on the Kris blade generate a lot of pressure. A friend cleaning up from and ice storm found that he would successfully cut branches that would require multiple cuts with other comparable sized folders.

I'd be interested in impressions you have about the knives cutting ability after you have EDCed it for a month or two...Thanks...Ed Schempp

Yes, They are pretty stiff at first. But like everyone said, it will loosen up a little bit. If you notice, the bar of the lock back, to be able to close the blade all the way, has to go deeper in the scales to acheive its course. So to close it one hand, you need to "Gravity close it!!!"
