Somebody asked to see a Thinned and convexed FBM. I got to tell you this was a butt load of work to do by hand. 3 1/2 hours. But this FBM is so much sweeter now. Ability to do work is about doubled...

With out further Diversion.... allow me to introduce the Busse Vampire killer

sweet....

i'd send you a couple of heavy hearts to take care of, but i'd never see them again (although i'm sure you would take good care of them ;) ).

awesome, couple of questions, I was under the impression that the new Busse knives were convex, so was I mistaken? And how did you do the reprofile?
Thanks

Sand paper and leather.

Started with 320 and worked the edge to form the thinner bevel. Then polished up through 2000 grit. The stropped with 2.5 micron powder on leather.

This edge will do all the typical sharpness tricks... tree top hair, slice free standing paper tubes, push cut news paper and phone book paper.

The best part is the highly polished edge LASTS way longer when chopping.

restoration after chopping is super fast...just a quick strop!

Great idea! Like your sharpening method and am going to give it a try. I have several Infi knives that just were not super sharp.

Why don't Busse knives come sharp? I can fold my hand around the blades without fear of cutting myself. I would even pay extra if they came shaving sharp.

Anyone else feel the same way?

I long ago lost any hope of sharp knives from the maker...

BRK&T is a notable exception. Every BRKT I have ever purchased has been at LEAST "very"sharp.

I like knives that are "ANGRY" sharp!

Got a Fallkniven Thor yesterday and was surprised by the scary shaving sharpness of the blade. I wish the Busse knives were this sharp. Am I missing something? Does a less sharp Infi blade outperform other steel that is scary sharp? I wonder if Infi blades are deliberately made this way for a reason. Comments appreciated.

This is straight from Jerry on the Busse site
Sharpening
INFI's high level of chip resistance also makes it the easiest steel to resharpen by hand that we have ever encountered. I personally fall into the category of "hand sharpening challenged". I've heard tales of those who can sharpen ball peen hammers to a razor's edge on an Arkansas stone in less than 5 seconds flat. My experiences have always been to the contrary. The spine of the knife is usually sharper than the edge when I'm finished applying my magic stone sharpening technique.

LOL :D Maybe that has something to do with it!
But no, I think they put a rough edge on it. But just like the sheath option. They let you decide on what kind of edge you want. The FBM posted above has a KILLER edge on it, but everyone might not want that. So busse lets you decide on what to do with it. I imagine if you asked them when you ordered a knife if they could put a more acute edge on it than normal they would definitely do it for you.
Now my FBMLE came shaving sharp right out of the sleeve. It wasn't a highly polished edge, but it was definitely the sharpest Busse I've recieved from the shop!

BTW Jim,
Thats a sweet looking duct tape sheath you have in the background! My LE is wearing a similar one.

The More JWB jerry has in him the better his sharpening skills. I have some factory Busses that are some of the sharpest knives I have ever had and I have some that came quite dull.

I know they know how to do an edge, because if you look at the Scrapper 6 LE, every single one I saw at Blade 06, including the ones I got were shaving sharp.

I'd be terrified to try something like that. I can't sharpen a pencil, let alone a blade.

Any online tutorials?

Great edge, I'm sure it's worth all that work.
Zaphop,
Get a double sided strop from Lee Valley, sand paper taped on one side, the green compound on the other. You'd be surprized at how easy it is. Fasten the knife securely, push the strop across the blade from the spine to the edge at a slight angle. Do some searching you'll find tons of information on how to do this and you'll then have sharp knives all the time.

book'em, funny you should mention that; I just ordered that strop yesterday.
Curious technique, secure the knife, use strop like a file. Did you find this gave you better control?
