Picked up these two hawks on the Exchange. The First was a K5 that had been lightly used. It had a small Nick in the edge and the powdercoat was scuffed up. I was not digging the Tan so I stripped it glass bead blasted it and gave it a light etch to really bring out the differentaly heated hawk head and haft. Then a quick sharpening and a run on a leather wheel and this thing is better then new and very sharp even though I left a fairly thick edge.

The next is an RMJ EAGLE TALON that had been around a bit and one of the prior owners really beat it up. He said he threw it at a car doors and chopped concrete and basically used it very hard. When I got it I was suprised to see that the edge only had a few nicks and that the Park was scuffed up a bit. A quick sharpening and then a go on the leather wheel had the edge like new but probale sharper . Then a quick touch up of the park and this thing looks like brand new.

Thanks For looking

Very nice renovation job on both!

WHY would you throw a RMJ EAGLE TALON at car doors and concrete blocks? VERY weird behaviour..............

Do you have a preference yet on one of them? I will be curious to hear from you in a month or so after you have had ample time to use them.

They both feel very different the K5 is the hawk I would pick if I had to break into or out of something. The Talan would be my choice as a weapon. You are right Until I get to use them I can not comment on how they cut and chop and how the handle's feel. The edges on both are very nice now and the K5 is much sharper than I am sure it came from K 5. As for looks it was a no contest when the K5 was powdercoated vut know that it is etched I think the contest is alot closer.

Nice addition to your collection ! They cleaned up great nice work...

Those hawks are bad to the bone. The K5 is a monster weighing in at 2lbs. It will go through a brick wall and the Talon is well balanced and quick and wouldn't want to get hooked by it. Nice job on the refinishing Joe!!

Dang Joe, are you like a secret knifemaker no one knows about or what?!! very nice job making those look like new.

They look great Joe:thumbup: the K5 couldn't look any better ...excellent job.

Hi crossada, Joe's a perfectionist. He has fixed and and restored a few of my blades and is really good at it.

Far from a knifemaker but as a kid I broke and hurt alot of things so I learned to fix and touch stuff up. I use alot of my knives and I like keeping them in top notch shape although scratches and scuff show character when I get something used I enjoy trying to bring it back up to snuff and then I can give it character. I am the same with guns or what ever. I have used knives for years and thru proper care and touch up's they still look almost like new.

Growing up without alot teaches you to take care of what you have - I take care of my stuff too

Great job on the refinishing Joe - and you're thinkin' on the uses for the K5 and Talon are right on from my perspective - the K5 would breah just about anything...and making a lasting impression in someone's hood (or their grill for that matter) - the Talon appears lighter, leaner and quicker in the hand...
and with likely superior hooking capabilities (now I want one of 'em...sigh) :(

The maker of the Talon has a video on you tube showing how it works opening up cars. You Tube search: Ryan Johnson tomahawk.

"hey richard put that cutting torch away i brought my talon hawk"
this was a dramatization.

after watching that vid i'm gonna have to look out for one for my kit.

Man you made the RMJ pretty again...... i am the culprit who beat the hawk, i only did it because Ryan said that was what it was for. I wanted to see if it could stand up to the claims of RMJ... it certainly did:thumbup:

i usually don't NOSS my blades... but i ask, is it abuse to use a hammer to drive a nail....??? i think not:D

fitzogagger It actually cleaned up very easily. Now I can beat it up all over again. It has been in and out of my truck and I think it it is a new favorite. Thanks for letting it go. I would be interested in hearing what you did to it because it really did not have much damage to the edge. Two passes on each side on the belt and a quick go on the leather wheel and it was like new.
