Pits in blade

I just finished several blades ATS34 heat treat
by Paul Bos. There are a few pits that showed up
after thay were put into the sheaths, The sheaths
were finished with a 50/50 mix of bees wax and neets
foot. The pits will need to be ground out as paper
won't cut it. The sheaths were made out of veg
tanned leather from the same side that I have been
using. Any ideas, this is not supposed to happen
to stainless steel. Gib

Yikes, that is weird! I've been using ats34 for a couple years now and never had anything like that happen. I have noticed with the last batch I bought from Admiral that as I sand it thru the finer grits, small pits appear. This is before heat treating though.

Gib, I had the same thing happen in 1985-86, with 154CM. This was after they quit vacuum smelting it.
I have had problems getting a good finish on ATS34 that originated from Admiral steel, but not the pits. Sounds like you got some bad stuff.
There was a thread on this very subject, at Steve Johnsons forum at CKD, awhile back.
I don't use Admirals ATS34 anymore.

I doubt the sheath had anything to do with. The beeswax and neets foot oil is the best rust inhibator known to man. I vote for bad steel also. Admiral has been trying to work up a bad reputation.

Thanks guys. I am begining to think that it is a
steel problum, I'm going to try and grind it out
will post results Gib

I was able to gring the pits out and then re finish
Can't find them now hope it stays that way, you
learn something new every day. Thanks for the info.
Gib
