platen?/

I got a coote grinder,not to bad, but not top of the line,,.problem is the platen is soft.wear is uneven,i tried the glass trick,broke on first grind pass.any ideas out there for me,,would micarta work?any help would be great.thanks royboy...

hek, forget any help on platen. i went into search,s``t man,all kinds of info.all i needed,thanks guys for this forum, royboy/ good morning vietnam. boo coo dinky dow.

Hi Guy,
Have you tried a hardened piece of steel and attach a graphite padding to it. The padding needs to be replaced after it wears away but it really cuts down on the friction. Let me know how that works.

I was surprized to hear you had the glass you used on your platten crack. Did you use tempered glass? Several of my knife friends and I have been using that for several years with fine results. We tried the graphite canvas thing and were very dissapointed .I can see where it might work for convex grinds but seems to become uneven very quickly.Frank.
 
You can use 1/4" glass instead of tempered glass. It's a lot cheaper and works quite well. Just remember to use double stick carpet tape to hold it on. I also made a new platen out of O-1. Had it hardened by Rob Simonich and haven't experienced any problems with it. Hope this helps.
