I am trying to set up a small flat disc sander. The shaft on my 4X36 messed up so I decided to try and make the disc off it variable speed.I set it up so it could be chucked up in my router:eek: Now I haven't got a speed controller for the router yet, just wanted to get it set up.Of course I decided to try it out:eek: .Now I used a old shank off from a broken drill bite for the shaft, thinking it would hold up to the stress. Now picture this.I pointed the router towards the wall just incase anything happened.....And boy did it:eek:   The drill bit snapped and the small aluminum disc flew off like one of those old flying saucer toys you would pull a string on and watch it fly away  It bounced off the wall flew down on the floor and went under the center bench--still spinning and dancing on its edge--luckily it bever caught traction to run only danced back to the bench I was working at and then it danced betwen my feet and I trapped it with my boots while I was laughing at it.It was funnier than heck after I realized it had missed me and was on the floor the worst part was that i got it set up on a sewing machine motor (which isn't strong enough, but very fast)only to realize that the disc had warpped during it's little flying dance. Now I will have to find another one:confused: Anybody got a old 4X36 that ain't no good that they would part with the small disc off the side of?
Laughing at myself histarically all day,
Bruce

Thanks for sharing that Bruce,Thats the best laugh I had all day.At least you had the foresight to point it away from you.

Now that another good laugh:D I should have thought of that last week and saved myself a bunch of money;)
Thanks for another great laugh.

Something just told me to hold it facing away from me as I was about to turn it on with it beside my chest and looking down on it.I was actually lucky as it could have been really serious excpecilaly since everybody was gone and I was home by myself at the time.
Glad I used my head forr a change.

Hey Bruce- thanks for a good laugh. I can still see you counting things to be sure they are all still there...

Email me your address and I will send you a disk.

Dave

Dave..You have Mail....

George,I hope so at least the rock is bolted on a proper shaft..That drill bit shattered like glass, whowould have thought that would happen.

This is a rough bunch Bruce. I had to laugh too. As a knife maker you need to remember that " Hard stuff snaps and soft stuff bends. In between stuff springs. Use springy shafts! ":D By the way the idea is good. I've done it on my router table with a speed controller and the plate off a 4X36 sander with a disc on the side!
It's nice to know that even the Great Ones slip up once in a while!

Doesn't a router turn upwards of 15K to 20K rpm?

That woulda been a heck of a sander

Hey Peter,Can I blame it on my teeth and say I wasn't thinking properly and shouldn't have been in the shop anyway;) I knew the mild shaft I started to cut wasn't a good idea. But never dreamed that the drill bit would snap like that,I will make a spring tempered shaft next time, and wait for the speed controller to arrive before starting it up this time:eek:

Dave H. I think that is about right,I don't know about sanding but it sure made the disc dance on its edge like a top for a while:D

I also haven't heard of any Great ones slipping up,Me I am just a normal knifemaker like the rest of you guys...
Bruce

Dave, they can turn upward of 35K. I have a speed controller on mine. Works on any AC motor that DOES NOT have Cap start.

 I also haven't heard of any Great ones slipping up,Me I am just a normal knifemaker like the rest of you guys...

Bruce
you trying to take Lucy Lawlesses job as leader of the Amazon women, Zenna throws a mean disk..:D  keep your head down..
