a year ago i found a plumb scout hatchet at a garage sale for like 4 bucks...the handle was in horrible shape and i figured id replace it eventually....well i never got around to it...and i just foudn it again, except i have a small problem...i have no idea where to get the properly fitted piece of wood to serve as a new handle...ive looked for hammer handles and other axe handels but they were too big... so i was wondering if there were any websited and or places to find a handle, or if there was some help in direction as to what kind of wood to find and finish into a handle i think i could pull that off too.

Thanks
BD

look in the hardware store and ask someone to help you find all the hammer handles. they should have some that will fit. go ahead and bring the head along with you, to fit the handles. you want the handle to be a bit too big, and then you can sand it to fit. don't go for too small, it won't really be too good.

There is a handle called "Boy scout hatchet handle" that is made for your head. You are more likely to find it at a farm supply store than a big box. It will take some fitting and watch the grain; seems like 3/4 of the handles out there have the grain run perpendicular to the strike direction.

I've also found better selections of handles in the smaller hardware stores than the big box stores. There are also on-line handle dealers that you can try. This place: "http://www.househandle.com/" has a lot, including "scout axe handles".

I will say though that recently someone here ordered from them and wasn't too happy with the condition of the handles they received, so use this place with caution. I would call them to order rather than do it on-line and be specific about what I was looking for, especially regarding grain direction, eye size, that sort of thing.
