i see some of these on ebay. they look to be slightly smaller than a credit card. anybody have an opinion on them.

i dont want one that takes off too much steel.:barf:

thanks.............Bill

be carefull because they can. however ive heard the more exspensive ones (bm,etc) are made of a much better grade of metal rippers.

well, I have bought the gerber diamont pocket sharpener a month ago.
They are really cheap so I thougt to give it a try.
With the pocket sharpener you can sharpen a small knife(opinel,sak,...) really quick.
The sharpeness is enough to cut paper smoothly, but you can't get it shaving sharp.
I sharpen my knives normally with a round ceramic stick of Aluminiumoxide that is made to test diamont saws.(I got it for free as it is a waste product). And with that I can sharpen my knives in a little longer time, but a lot sharper.
So I have given it away to my brother who is satisfied with a medium sharp knive that is easyly sharpened(he hasn't got the patience to use a ceramic stick or learn to use it).

So my conclusion is:

The pocket sharpener is perfect for someone who wants to sharpen his small pocket knives to a moderate level of sharpness with real ease of use.
They do take away a lot of metal if you push your blade too hard on it, but that has the advantage that you can make a dull blade sharp in no time). If you sharpen your knive only once a month or so, I don't think the loss of metal will be a big problem for you.
It also is very cheap and compact compared to other sharpening tools on the market.

On the other hand, if you are handy with other sharpening tools, and want your knives to have a more than moderate sharpness, I recommend you to use something else. AND you can sharpen your knives at the angle you want, and are not bound to a V-grind.
If you can find a round ceramic stick like I did for free it will be even cheaper .(you can find topics about (finding) them on other places on BF I think).

Btw, The Pocket sharpeners are indeed about the size of a credit card, but a lot thicker(about 0,3" or 1 CM)
Since I have given it away I can't measure it any more, but the following image is real size( on my screen at last):

I can't compare the quality with pocket sharpeners of other companies as I haven't used any of them yet.
I got mine in a webshop for about $2,5.(excl shipping)
