Police without "Police" etched on blade?

I recently bought a new Military and I was surprised (and pleased) to find that when it was delivered to me that it didn't have Military etched in on the blade. So now I'm curious if Spyderco is also doing this with the Police model (I hope so). I tried using the search function to find an answer for this but it seems that ever time I try to it loads a page with this message: "The page cannot be displayed."

I'm lookin' at the '06 catalog and sure enough the police has "police" scrawled across the blade:grumpy: guess I ain't buyin' one in '06.

This is why I don't own a Spyker. I wanted that knife from the second I heard about the Kershaw/Spyderco collaboration, then I saw all that silly stuff on the blade. :barf:

Why oh why.

Does anyone know whether the Paramilitary still has that etched on the blade? I'm with the rest of you....don't like the name on the blade. Some pictures I have seen it have it and some do not. It's just preference I guess, but it seems like a toy or some marketing-influenced piece of junk with the name, not the high quality tool that it really it. It doesnt have the name in the '05 catalog, which is a good thing. (Where did you get the '06 catalog...I didn't see it on Spyderco's website).

Aside from the prototype picture, The ParaMilitary never had its name etched in the blade, only the prototype had it. Reaction to that picture was quite negative, so the change got made before the knife reached production.

Removing the name from the Police was tried around 12 years ago. Apparently in that particular case, the removal had a negative impact on sales, so the name was restored. So, the "good news" for those who want a Police without the name is, they can be found, you just have to do a bit more searching, and be able to live with G-2 steel.

Point is, it's an interactive process. Spyderco markets something. People respond by complaining about some aspect of it. Spyderco responds to the complain by making a change. The market responds to the change by purchasing more or fewer of the knife. Spyderco then responds to the market.

Hi Guys
The POLICE brand can be easily removed from many of the blades with a light buffing or by the use of fine abrasive paper. My thought would be to "get over it" with regard to name on blades. As long as it doesn't say SUPER DEATH KILLER BLADE its all good. No one complains if condoms are marked ROUGH RIDER or some thing similar and then advertised all over the place.

lol, I think I would actually prefer it to say "SUPER DEATH KILLER BLADE" :D. As far as condoms go I could get over that but when it comes to something thats not disposable and cost over 100 dollars I don't like to "get over it". I had always thought that the markings wouldn't come off that easliy because it was etched in to deeply. I might just have to try some fine abrasive paper on one... thanks for the idea. Maybe I'll get lucky and popular demand will bring about another run of policeless Police's :D.

The etch on the later knives with ATS-55 blades can be really light, not sure about the VG-10 blades they are marked with a different method. The odd sterile knife comes up on Ebay but rarity pushes up the price.

Edit: got that the wrong way round. The VG-!0 knives have a light etch on the blade, not the ATS-55 ones.Had to check my collection, I have two G-2 knives with no POLICE mark (FS and PE) and a pair of Tuffram ones with no marks, so they are out there.

I had a Spyker and traded for several reasons but one minor reason was that "SPYKER" on the blade. It looked silly. The Police on the blade is not nearly as bad but I would prefer it without as well. The Military was pretty bad as well but nothing compares to the "SPYKER". It is such a well made knife and a really useful one as well but it is made to look cheap with all that paint work on the blade.

Hmmm just noticed a pair of Aluminium C07s without a blade marking, I have GOT to get this collection sorted!!!!

kgriggs8, I'm with you. I also think its silly to put the name on the blade. I mean it just seems that if someone wanted something etched on it bad enough they could pay someone a few bucks to get it done whereas its much more difficult for those of us who don't like it to get it removed, whilst not making the blade look like crap.

I wish on the SS Police model they would have the blade look like this one: http://i.guns.ru/forums/icons/forum_pictures/000133/133415.jpg. Does anyone know if a SS model like that was ever made? It doesn't appear to have the little indent at the tip of the blade like the SS models do.

That looks like a nice flat grind... I just got a Police SS, and I would much prefer a flat grind over the standard grind on mine.

Either way, this knife kicks a$s, especially in full SE.

Peace.

Spyderco innovates, probably more than any other knife company out there. But it also has to respond to the market. The full flat ground G10 Police, while cherished by us "knifeknuts" failed to evoke a similar response from distributors, dealers, and the general public, so it was dropped. I would guess that, coupled with the poor market response to other flat ground blades, would limit the chances of a full flat ground stainless Police being offered. I would also guess that removing the name from the Police had a negative impact on sales, and led to it being restored. Sal often says something along the lines of "the market is a harsh, but honest teacher".

An incredible knife collection that is only outdone by the photos themselves!

Mind boggling!

Thanks for the idea (it helped me kill two birds with one stone). I just recently found one on eBay that was NIB and at $77 I couldn't resist :D . Best of all it comes without the Boye dent!!:Djoy:D!!

Speaking of G-2 how does it compare in edge retention with some of the current steels that Spyderco offers?

Glad things worked out for you! Know what you mean about the joy of a "dent free" front lock. :D

As for the steel, G-2 (which is another name for GIN-1) is an excellent steel. Up to the avent of the "super steels", like VG-10 and S30V was considered one of the top stainless steels for knivemaking. Edge retention is not quite as good as the newer ones, but the tradeoff is that sharpening is easier.

Hey all...
I have a NIB G10 Police, (single liner) fully serrated ATS-55 Blade, w/o POLICE on the blade. From what's been written here... is this a rare Spydie?
