Polishing stainless gaurds?

I decided to use a piece of 416 stainless for a gaurd on a small bowie, not haveing the right thickness in nickle silver.

I have taken it to 1000 grit so far, what's next? I'm going to try buffing, but this is got to be the most agrivating gaurd I've made yet. Next time I'll wait for my nickle silver to get in. Normaly I get a mirrow finish on nickle silver by takeing to 600 grit and then buffing, not this stuff.

Any suggestions on the best way to work it?

Thanks

I do the same as George. The Green compound will remove the scratches from near anything.

There are special compounds for stainless. You didn't say what kind of stainless, what I use is 316C (because I get scraps free) and take it to 220 on the grinder, get rid of the scratches with a Scotch brite wheel, then polish. Usually only a couple of minutes on the polishing wheel cleans it up nicely.
Now if I could just learn to solder the 316. Oh well.

Thanks, All I have is white rouge, thats all I've ever needed for nickle silver, brass or 1018.

It polished up ok, just a lot more work than nickle silver.

There are special compounds available for almost any metal or other material so don't struggle trying to find one all purpose compound, there ain't no such thing.

I have a hard glued wheel with green and a sewn muslin
with scratchless pink and it really puts a shine on it.
