Ok...I have fed my Sebenza fetish (a few times over)...here's my next delemma...

I am looking for another hard-use folder. I like the handle feel of the commander (have two already), but I want the 1/4" thick S30V blade of the new striders. What would you pick...IF YOU COULD HAVE ONLY 1????

If I could have only one?

Hmmm... Tough question W. I own both a Commander and an AR. Both are wonderful knives. However they really are apples and oranges. The commander sits very nicely in the pocket, is lighter weight, has the WAVE, and has a recurve. Plus the edge is chisel ground.

The AR... This blade is a veritable Abrams Tank. It is a flat out LARGE pocket knife. Almost too large, but once you get used to it, it ceases to be seen as such. The New AR is flat ground with a conventional edge. It also has a sizeable choil that allows the user to choke up on the blade and perform more controlled tasks. The liner lock is much thicker (but then so is the blade) and the placement of the choil is significant. It provides the user with an extra layer of protection in the event or a lock failure. If the blade folds down on your hand, the choil prevents the edge from biting your fingers off.

I love both knives. If I could have only one... It would have to be the AR. I've never held a GB. Supposedly it is even larger than the AR. Tough to imagine.

Enjoy the decision making process. Whichever one you decide upon, you'll be very pleased.

BTW, both companies (EKI and STRIDER)lifetime guarantee their tools.

I second Kampfjaeger.

I have a bunch of folders, and my AR is by far the most heavy duty. I have the new flat ground one. Have not seen a GB yet...but they look very nice too.

So...basically everything Kampfjaeger said. :D

Those Sebenza's look like great knives too! Been thinking of getting a small one.

You can see the choil Kampfjaeger spoke about.

:) LOL. I guess the motivation for this poll was to help convince myself that I NEEDED an AR...esp. now that they are coming in S30V. I like the wave on my commander...and will keep it.

Yes...an AR should round out my little assortment of folders...(repeat 25x)...

I really like the Commander, but I would take the Strider AR. It is built like the proverbial tank and I think it looks great. I like the spear point of the AR more than the GB's tanto and that is the reason I would choose the AR over the GB.

thats a hard one, my old commander is one of my favorites - ya know, one of those knives ya have which are'nt for sale/trade because ya know ya will just have to go out and get another one - excellent ergos anf the wave make it a top notch knife imho

but if i had to choose between it and a strider GB, i would take the strider, just a lot heavier duty folder, maybe not so great for edc, but a stout knife for sure, more $$ though- big old thick thing, they are just cool, what can i say?

ya should get a GB and then save and get a commander too, everyone should have at least one waved emerson imho

Thanks SIFU1A! I have 2 commanders already....but I thank you for helping to convince me to open my wallet (wide) for another knife....

Plus...every Marine should own a Strider knife.... ;) (again, repeat this to wife 25 times...) :)

Here's your plan, Warrior Sociologist:

1) Buy Strider AR and STAND PROUD!

2) Buy wife some jewelry, or lots of roses, or roses and dinner.

Hmm... flip that around!

1) Buy wife jewelry, roses, or roses and dinner

2) Buy Strider AR, and retain ability to stand, having done #1 first!!!

A Hearts and Minds campaign is ESSENTIAL with a knife purchase like this one!

I have quite a few folders, but that is changing (selling, trading, giving to buds) becouse I have a AR in the S30V and trully feel the need to rid myself of anything that doesn't compare so...out with 99% of them. Keeping my SAK and other "tools" but as far as single large blade folders...later.

Personally i wouldn't choose a liner-lock for hard use, but IMO the AR is the best choice of the three. :)

What don't you like about the liner lock? I'm just curious.

In my experience, the liner lock has been the most secure type of lock I've used - and I've used my blades pretty hard.

There are those who seem to prefer the frame lock, though. I checked one out on a Sebenza (not overly wowed by it but I have a healthy respect for it as a very well made sturdy blade) and it seemed to be another exceptional lock design.

I personally don't like the liner-lock because testing by others (for example check out some of Cliff Stamp's tests on liner-lock folders here) and my own (limited) personal experience has taught me not to trust them on hard use folders. The best liner-locks i've seen have failed in situations where lock-backs have held up, the worst liner-locks i've seen have folded under hand pressure on the spine of the blade.

I haven't handled a Strider, the figures show that the liner-lock on them is considerably thicker (almost twice as thick in most cases) than on most other folders, including those implicated above, therefore i think it's safe to presume that they are able to withstand much more abuse than other liner-locks. :)
