I was wondering if anyone has any real experience with the glass breaking pommel on the RC-3? I always thought that an intended glass breaker had to have a sharper tip like what the surefire pen uses. I plan on keeping my RC-3 in my truck and I wouldn't want to find out during an emergency that the pen is mightier than the "knife", no pun intended.:D

Standard RC3 model I tried on an Aircraft windshield two different models,Cessna 172, windshields are plexiglass...4 strikes and I had penetrationand caused enough damage to break out if need be,next was a Baron windshield...Ok thicker close to 1/2" thick Plexiglass much harder to penetrate.10strikes and was not thru.
the RC3 MIL version(Sharpen Pommel) 2strikes C172 and there was penetration. on to the B-55 ,10 strikes and cracks forming and sufficent damage.
Car windshield none to practice on,I would feel safer with the pommel sharpend VS Standard but remeber I tried it on Aircraft windshields(Plexiglass) not Car/Truck glass.

A US Marshal buddy of ours tried a standard RC-3 on some auto glass in South America. No problems blasting through it. Also read the NTOA's (National Tactical Officers Association) officer review of the standard RC-3 here and its use as a glass punch: http://www.ratcutlery.com/NTOA review.pdf

The RC-3MIL has a very sharp point and easily goes through auto glass and will penetrate plexiglass as Tony mentioned above. With that said, the point is hardened to 57-58 Rc and after a couple of times blowing out auto glass (not plexiglass) the fine point will dull somewhat. It will still break glass but if you want it absolutely sharp again you have to hone it.

The RC-3MIL will be released to the public sometime in 2009.

I admit to speaking out of ignorance here...I have never tried to break through either the plexiglass of an aircraft or the window of an auto...with anything. But, with a quality blade like the RC, do you really need a glass pommel? In theory, wouldn't the tip of the blade do the trick?

Really...how many times would someone have to break through a window in their lifetime?

Since there are no "stupid questions", may I ask (and I'm not kidding):

what would cause someone to need to break auto glass? Is it to get in to a car wreck, or out?
what other reasons are there for a glass-breaker?
Thanks.

Well...if you just went off the road and are seatbelted into the driver's seat, upside down, in a creek, and your car is filling up with water...my guess is you would want to cut that seatbelt, break the glass, and get out.

If you are driving down the road and see a car go off the road and land upside down in a creek and begin filling up with water...you may want to break the glass, cut the seatbelt, and rescue anyone inside.

I really don't mean to be sarcastic if that's how this comes across.... How often something like that is going to happen was the point of my post.

 nothing I worry about if needed the XD9 is within reach

Hands down...the XD would win out every time!

(But you still wouldn't be using the pommel.... ;))

Like the saying goes:" Better to have and not need than need and not have".
