Portland

I can't tell you any stores, but there are certainly a lot of knife companies in Portland... Coming up in April, there is a big show in Eugene. Its a must see. A lot of great makers from all over. Plan on spending the better part of a day looking though.

There's a good one diagonally across the street from the Benson Hotel (if they still call it that) in Downtown Portland. I actually think the knife place is called "Portland Cutlery" and related to a good knife store down the road from Portland in Salem. I visited the one in Portland during BLADE W a few years ago, worth the effort.

Since George & Son's closed there is not much. As posted above the OKCA show in Eugene is a pretty large show. Also the Collectors West Gun & Knife shows have a pretty good selection. The one at the Portland Expo Center is the one to hit. The others are pretty small. Here is a link to the show scheduled. Show Schedule

george and sons closed back in 2005 i believe and i got a killer deal on a BM 710 and assorted other leathermen squirts and such.

the only real knife store left outside of those crappy ones in the mall is portland cutlery downtown. they are bascially hanging on, dependent on the local cooking school for business so plz shop there. the owner will be happy to give you a good deal!

Portland Cutlery just closed down within the last month I believe. The only cutlery shops left in Portland are Excalibur Cutlery and Gifts and Hawthorne Cutlery.

WOW! Portland Cutlery closed?!?!?! I used to ogle every item in that shop when I was younger (grew up in Lake Oswego) every time I went downtown!

That is a sad sight, especially when you think that Portland is a central city as far as knife production is concerned, and if the local establishments cant even keep their doors open, whos next?

What a loss of such a nice gentleman. I forget his name, but I used to frequent his shop, just to look (under the age to buy a knife [plus, back then I thought it was crazy to buy a $100 knife, oh how time has changed] at the time) and he would talk knives, and show anything and everything he had to those who were interested.

It is very difficult to stay in business in a brick and mortar shop with the extra overhead and compete with the web dealers that do not incur that overhead and can offer the same knives at a much lower price. Sad, but true. I like to handle a knife before buying it and that is why I hit the gun/knife shows. And yes, I am guilty of going to the knife shop at the mall and checking out a knife and then going home and ordering it on line for much less. If it was only a few bucks, I would buy it at the shop. But when the shop wants $200 and I can get it on line shipped for $150, sorry.

my god, portland cutlery closed? thats horrible. that and georges were the only real knife shops left in town. the rest are mall stores selling 420j2 "swords" for $200.

that observation that portland is the HQ for many top knife brands yet cannot support a knife culture is sadly correct. in fact when i left a year ago they passed an ordinance of no "weapons" on the max train; me and my BM 710 were hasseled immediately.

portland is a very sheeple friendly consumerist-liberal-gun banning-anti-knife town that strips its citizens of even basic civil rights. knives are considered evil things; they prefer to wield lattes.

I have to disagree with you there. Excalibur Cutlery has a large selection of kershaw/BM/william henry. And acceptable selections of spyderco/buck/Al mar. As well as multiple high end kitchen lines. Hawthorne Cutlery is also run by the local CAS Iberia Rep and has a large selection of new and antique swords. He also carries some rare custom knives and a decent selection of Microtech knives.

this statment also causes me some trouble. I have carried everything from a 6In fixed blade to a BM42 to my small william henrys on the MAX and never had one ounce of trouble. They have even stepped up the number of LEOs on the MAX and never had a problem(I ride 4-5 days a week twice a day)

glad to hear that but me and my buddies with fixed blades no longer than 3.5in were hasseled constantly coming home from work by those max train rentacops.

god bless texas where the laws are CLEAR and 5.5in is the rule.

There is no blade length limitation in Oregon.

oh, yes there certainly is! tell that to the green meanies (jump-suited sheriffs) or the regular pdx police who pull out yer knife and measure it by the palm of yer hand; if its longer then theyll confiscate it and then you get to see the judge.

the state might not have a limitation on length but brother believe me the CITY of Portland does and has passed its own ordinances concerning knife length and what is considered a "weapon".

heres one ordinance:
20.12.050 Possession of Weapons.
No person shall possess in any Park any thing specifically designed for and presently capable of causing, or carried with the intent to threaten or cause, bodily harm to another. Things prohibited under this Section include, but are not limited to: any firearm, pellet gun, spring-loaded weapon, stun gun or taser, any knife having a blade that projects or swings into position by force of a spring or by centrifugal force, any knife with a blade longer than 3-½ inches, any dirk, dagger, ice-pick, sling shot, slungshot, metal knuckles, nunchaku, studded handcoverings, swords, straight razors, tear gas containers, saps, sap gloves, hatchets or axes. The prohibitions of this Section do not apply to handguns lawfully carried by persons exempt from local regulation under ORS 163.173. The prohibitions of this Section do not apply to any thing possessed or used to carry out actions authorized by any contract or permit in any Park.

being on the max train, state court houses etc has still other limitations:

http://trimet.org/about/code/index.htm

scroll down and search chapter 28 (District Vehicles mean trains or buses or any vehicle run by tri-met) and it clearly states that only folding knives are legal and only with a blade length of 3.5in.

merely googling state knife laws is not enough as some states allow cities and counties to pass there own laws concerning firearms, knives etc that normally would clash with the state consitution.

trust me I know this the hard way.

oh, and while yer there check out the "exclusion" laws. this is not just on buses, trains or parks but entire areas of the city can be prohibited to you WITHOUT DUE PROCESS. a police officer can exclude you from entering certain areas if he FEELS you are a danger, nuisance or have or about to cause a crime.

liberals fear lawful citizens carrying guns or fixed blades but they arm and empower a tyrannical police state to wipe out your civil rights.

god bless texas (at least on the gun and knife laws)
