Ok, it's obvious that the chat isn't working in it's current form. Too many people are complaining about how it doesn't work, crashes their computers, etc.

I'm tempted to say that it's just that you guys have weak computers, but since it's happening to me too, I know better

So, I want solutions from you guys. Let's hear it.

People keep saying that they want to switch to IRC, well, I want to hear which is the best IRC server and why. I want to know just where you guys stand on this chat situations.

Remember, this site is memeber driven, so like always, your opinions counts.

As far as IRC server...who knows, but as far as IRC networks, my vote is for DALnet. I have been hanging out on DALnet for a few years, they were the first to implement services (i.e. ChanServ NickServ) which alow you to actually register channels and nicknames. The lag is kept to a minimum, the IRCops are friendly, and helpfull...while on other networks I have had some be actually rude to me.

If you would like help with a chat channel on DALnet I am very familiar with the network and can help you set it up, and also tell you all kinda stuff about running one.

The only problem I see with that is that anyone can join...this not being a problem itself...but it can be if there are no ops, and someone obnoxious comes in.

just my thoughts....look me up on DALnet, my nick is ShadedDude

I'm for anything that works that my server will support, as long as I don't have to use IE.

Well, chat on DALnet went pretty well tonight, and we are going to test it out for the rest of the week to see how it goes.

There have already been offers of help in putting together BladeForums.com custom packages of mIRC and standard .wav files, as well as a very generous offer for a walkthrough on how to get started.

Ideally, with the BladeForums.com specialized mIRC, all the user will have to do is download the .zip file from our server here, unzip it into a directory, start the program, select a nickname and go! We'll have to see how it works in practice, of course.

As a test, we'll be showing up on DALnet in the #BladeForums.com channel for the rest of the week. Any changes will be announced here.

It might be a good idea to tell people how and when to get on to dalnet and into the BladeForums chat.

Spark,

I vote for DALnet as well.

Watch out for anything that requires specilized software(mIRC) for those of who are computer nomads.

Hey all,

I think I just about have a version of MIRC modified so it's set up to join a dalnet server automatically and join the right # when it connects automatically. The popup will ask for your info the first time around (email, name, nickname, spare nickname). When it's done to my satisfaction I'll get it to spark and he can test it and work something out for distribution.

Dalnet is nice because of nickserv and chanserv, however efnet is a more stable server/split wise.

Any irc network is going to be MILES above anything else I have seen or used. Parachat is a joke, you can't deal with people that abuse it. It disconnects people regularly, it does not like some browsers, it's slow, it has annoying ads, the list goes on and on.

Downloading software for it may not be as easy as pointing a browser to a url, but those of us that are on the chat a lot can tell you it's annoying at best to use. Think of it as been disconnected from your ISP every 30 minutes if you liek it or not and the few minutes your on, everything runs at 1200baud modem speed and you have to watch ads
smile.gif
can't cut and paste efficently, can't log conversations for later use (say email or URL's)

It's not as user friendly but it's so much better that it's more than worth taking half a hour to familiarize yourself with it.

Todd

I set up a web page with screen captures to walk you thru the set up. I just e-mailed it to Spark and he will set it up soon and give it a permanent URL.

Until then you can see it here: http://www.tcsn.net/doncicci/irc.htm

Thanks Dona,
Looking forward to saying hello tonight. I have missed you folks.

Spark,

I H-A-T-E IRC Chat!! Last year I downloaded that program to test and it installed itself as an auto-activate upon boot up with *no* uninstall option! If I hadn't had a specialized technicians utility I don't think I ever could have purged that piece of #$%^& from my computer!

If our chat is going to require something like that, I guess I'm stuck with e-mail and the forums. I do have AIM as a built in accessory to Netscape and it works well one-on-one but it can't handle what you're looking for.

I VOTE NO TO IRC!!!!!

Bob, I just finished creating a self extracting .exe file that contains the BladeForums.com Custom mIRC, made by Todd Morken.

I'll be uploading it in a few minutes, but basically all you have to do is download it (704K), and run it, and specify what directory you wish to install it in.

Once it is installed, all you have to do is start it and you will automatically be connected to the correct server. I'll have instructions up later tonight as well.

Gotta tell you, finding an open Dal net server is a REAL pain. I lost my connection and spent 30 min tring to connect ot another one. Not good.

I am also looking at a way to use my computor as a server. I am connected 24/7 at 1200k (Yes 1200k) so my system is very fast and can handle up to 100 connects. I am tweaking some software which will make my computer emulate a server. You will still need the IRC software but I may be able to create a shortcort which downloads it at the same time.

Mike, there is a windows IRC server program.
Easy to operate.

Bald1...Just throwing this out for you...
if you go to www.dal.net in your browser, there is an option in the menu to TELnet to DALnet...click the link and it will automaticly bring up windows TELnet client...and tell it what to do...once it is up just follow the directions on how to connect...it will give them to you.
Then once connected...type /join #BladeForums.com and it will put you in the channel.

Brain flatulance strikes again!

The abnormally poor conditions here which have seen me require the help of a 4x4 and a tow truck on two successive days (nothing like hitting a 3.5 foot drift in the middle of the road under white out conditions at 15 mph!) havw scrambled my thinking. DC was kind enough to point out that the software I abhor so much is the now defunt mIRQ NOT mIRC. So I hope to try out this stuff soon.

Just never ever had a problem with our old chat format...couldn't understand what all the fuss has been about precipitating the need for change.....

Bob..

You dislike ICQ (from Mirabilis.com).

IRC=Internet Relay Chat

IRQ=interupt request line ("circuits" within your computer)

These acronyms can kill ya
