At 10am this morning I received a prayer request from my church.

The Commander asked for prayers from Christians but he's getting the Buddhist variety from me and I'll suggest that others of varying faiths step up to the line, also.

Thanks. Sitting here drinking coffee and smoking cigarettes gives me a pang of guilt and does my ulcer no good when I think about those guys offering up life and limb to keep me in this easy life enjoying all the freedoms we take for granted. Prayers are not enough but in my position that's about all the help I can give now.

If someone sees any news on this, would you mind posting a link? I've been watching the AP wire, and nothing's shown up. Hopefully that means it's nothing "major", though getting shot at in the first place is pretty major!

Deepest respect for guys on the ground protecting my butt, and the abstract freedoms I take for granted every day.

Done.

I don't see anything on the BBC site, either. I did a quick scan of some of the Middle Eastern sites, too. Nothing. I haven't checked the Islamic fundamentalist sites. But, they're always claiming great victories over the "kuffar", anyway.

Prayers sent from Smithville, TX. I know most if not all the old Marines wish we could do more than this.

Prayer Sent. Thanks for the reminder, Uncle. In the everyday hustle and bustle, I hadn't really thought about those in harm's way in a while. I'm once again guilty of taking care of urgent things, but not important things. :o

Prayers from this old Marine. These are the times that I wish I were younger, so I could be of help in the physical way. My prayers and good thoughts go out to all involved in the cause for the good side.

It's not going to be over in Afghanistan for a long time and there are always going to be outbreaks. We may not hear about 3 or 4 guys getting shot up. Not enough, perhaps, to be important enough to make the news. But if you're one of the 3 or 4 or they are your husbands or kids it becomes pretty damned important.

Prayers sent too. ...

I've been keeping a very close eye on the AP wire and haven't seen anything yet. Our paper would have jumped on a story involving USAF folks, as we have a large base here in Rapid. But, like Bill said, just cause they are in a bloodbath doesn't mean we'd hear about it.

If I see anything when I'm at work, I'll post the basic info here. There are a lot of stories that get moved on the AP that don't always make it in the papers.

I read something this morning off the AP wire:

4 Al Qaeda Suspects Killed in Battle With U.S. Troops
By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS
U.S.-led special forces battled suspected Al Qaeda militants in two firefights today, killing up to four of them, near the border with Pakistan.

If the guy's an AF Combat Controller, it's very possible that he was running around with SF guys. I agree with Bill, though. 95% of the stuff that hits the fan won't show up in the news. I think, in this case, no news is good news (no body bags). But then again, no bodies isn't necessarily good news to the guy in the wheelchair.

Hey Spence, are there any middle eastern sites you could recommend?

So far I have found ummah.net and arabia.com.

-Dave

Dave:

ummah.net falls into the fundamentalist category, IMO. If you ever want to get depressed about the world we live in, read their forum some time. I always have to go converse with my Egyptian-American friend afterwards to remember that not all Muslims think like that.

arabia.com - Haven't looked at it in awhile, but it's similar to ummah.net, IIRC.

Here are some others to check out:

wrmea.com
www.jpost.com (Jerusalem Post)
www.amin.org
www.arab.net
www.bahraintribune.com
www.beiruttimes.com
www.gulf-news.com
www.khaleejtimes.com
www.mideastnews.com
www.haaretzdaily.com
www.menewsline.com
www.irna.com (Iranian gov't sanctioned news)

I don't have the al-Ahram (Egyptian gov't sanctioned news)address on this machine, but it's something like www.alahram.org.

I try to get info from a variety of sources. I go to al-ahram, irna.com and haaretzdaily.com at least once per week. I hit the others every so often.

You typically know what the Jerusalem Post, IRNA and the Arab sites are going to say. But, I try to pay attention to what is coming from both sides.

HTH,

S.

Edit - took out kuwait-times, they still aren't running, yet. Al-ahram is http://www.ahram.org.eg

Edit - @#$%! Still having trouble with al-ahram. Look for the "Weekly" link on the above url.

Ask and you shall receive.

Many thanks!

I had a buddy send me a martial arts link one time which I eventually followed back to ummah. Yes, the forum really is something...

I can't remeber exactly how I stumbled on arabia, but I think Matt Drudge might have linked to it one time, maybe.

Off exploring I go...

I'm with you Pappy. My mind is willing buy my body is too old.

Good luck, Dave. Just remember to take your blood pressure medication with you.

I found ummah and one other similar site off a martial-arts search, too. (It showed up under "Islamic fighting arts" or something similar.) I linked to a third site off of ummah. Followed all three for awhile. All basically the same. All have disappeared, except ummah - I understand that the British gov't. closed several sites that "encouraged hatred" not too long ago.

Many thanks, all. As stated, if you can't be with them the next best thing is to pray for them.

Thanks for good help, Spence.
