I don't know what the mark VB stands for. Got it from a casual collector and he didn't know the maker's name. The knife is unused but I did sharpen it. It came to me very dull, so I stropped the edge into a convex edge and now it's very sharp and will slice paper or shave readily. I had intended to use it, but these days I have fewer and fewer chances to go into the woods and too many knives in my collection as is.
I don't know the steel. If I had to guess I would say 1095, based on it being the steel that I come across the most whenever I see the patch/frontier type of knives done. But I really don't know what the steel is for sure. The blade measures 4.5" from tip to handle as measured along the spine, and the overall length is 9.25". The handle is rosewood and the pins are brass.
It does not come with a sheath. I never got a chance to have one made for it after I bought it.
