Pro Cut grinder adjustment; help needed!

I have a used Pro Cut that I've used a little bit, but it needs an adjustment to make it work better when flat grinding. I appears that the 8" contact wheel is about 1/4 of an inchfrom where it should be. That is when I put a belt on it and line it up on the contact wheel the edge of the belt is right on the outside edge of the tracking wheel and hangs off of the edge of the platen.

To me it appears that the contact wheel needs to be moved in about an 1/8" to 1/4". How would I go about doing this. Do I move the wheel itself in on the axle or does the whole axle move over through the pillow block bearings somehow?

Any help is greatly appreciated for my tinkering!

Would spacing the wheel with some fender washers help?
I am not familiar with the pro-cut grinder, so the above is off the top of my head.
If it becomes a real problem, contact Rob Frink. He can fabricate just about anything.

Guy,
I don't have a Pro Cut, but there are usally set screws on the tube in the pillow blocks that the shaft passes through. Loosen those and slide the shaft to get the alignment you need and retighten.
If you don't want to try that Koval Knives carries the Pro Cut and you could give them a shout.
Regards,
Greg

Guy,
Not to worry...it is an easy fix/adjustment. There are 2 set screws in each pillow block on the main lower shaft. Loosen them and slide to whole shaft with pulley, buff, and contactwheel left or right to get it aligned were you need it. Then be sure to tighten the set screws. It may take a few trials untill you have it were you want. Once it is in place...you'll never have to worry about it again.

Good Luck,
Rob

Thanks for the help! Now I know to concentrate my efforts on the pillow blocks. Sounds like an easy fix now. That's the neat thing about knifemaking, I seem to learn more non-knife related things!

Here's another question, the pillow block bearings are fitted with grease ports. What kind of grease and how often should they be lubricated?

guy, i like the white lithium kind. but any bearing grease like Mc kays will do the job. the grease ports have a over flow so i just ad a little every forty HR, of use.

Ideally, ...Make it a habit to squirt a shot or two from a grease gun after....say 10-20 hrs of running... I'm not very technical about the type of grease....for me, I just use a general purpose grease from the local hardware store. The bearings don't need the fresh grease so much for lubrication, however a fresh shot cleanses the bearing of old grease and swarf keeping everything sanitary inside. When you grease them, you'll see the old stuff squeeze out...pump one or two more times until you see some fresh grease squeeze out indicating that you've purged/flushed the bearing. Wipe everything clean and go to work. On the otherhand, if you forget to grease them....heck don't worry too much, I have a set on a blower that must be 8-10 years old and have never been greased...still quiet as a church mouse (knock knock).

Take care,
Rob
