Problem with Waved Delica 4

I recently purchased a Delica 4. Great knife, great improvements over the 3 all the way around. Well, I decided to wave it, cut the hole, great, works just like other things I've waved. Well...I came to notice then that occasionally after I'd waved it open, the knife would look like it locked open, when in fact it was not quite. Turns out, if I do the wave "gently" then it engages fine, no problem. However, if I pull it very vigorously, the blade doesn't quite lock open. It's almost like it pops open then bounces back before the lock has a chance to engage. It seems like it's jumping the lock.

Anyone have any suggestions? Of course, cutting on the blade voided the warrenty, so that's out, and I wouldn't expect Spyderco to fix it anyways. I know I could pay the $25 bucks for a repair, but that's the thing--the knife isn't exactly defective. Lockup is solid, and it functions fine if waved less-than-full-power. I did the same thing to the Delica 3 I've got, and I've never had a problem with it.

I've played around with the tension, I've reoiled it, the lock well is clean and dry...anyone have any suggestions?

Unfortunately, you've modified the Delica to do something the lock was never designed to accomodate. What's probably happening is that the blade hilt is bouncing back off the lock lever due to the higher impact of flipping (waving) it open. Perhaps a stronger lock spring would increse the speed of lock engagement, but again, it's not something Spyderco W&R is likely equipped to do (especially for a Japan manufactured knife). Maybe a custom folder maker could make a stronger lock spring.

Take the blade out of the knife and rotate the lock bar out of the way. Then take out the spring and bend the lock spring you have down just a little bit more and then put it back in.

There is an official waved Delica and Endura on the way.

any idea on when that may be?
i also recall seeing something about a removeable wave on a spyderco

Just what I'd expect from you.... good, solid advice!

You might want to let Spyderco know about this, just as a heads up. They may have adjusted the lock on the Waved Delicas to accomodate the increased stress, but if there's no planned adjustments on it, this may be a common problem once they're released.

Hi Blade Man,

I just opened a regular factory waved Delica4 as hard as I could with no locking problems.

I found this at first when I waved my Delica3. After some practice, it works every time. What type wave did you cut into it? Was it right through to the hole or just a notch out in front of it?

It may be technique, how you've waved it or the type of pockets you have amongst other things?

that could be it too. maybe you're pulling it out hard and in your haste not pulling it out correctly? it might not be bouncing back but rather not opening fully.

Thanks, STR. I'll give that a try.

Sal, that's what's odd, my waved Delica 3 is fine, and this 4 only does it sometimes.

Daverave, I don't think it's technique, I've used a waved Delica 3 for a long time and Emersons before that. I know how to work the wave.

Thanks for the input, everyone.

Hey Blade man,

it is possible that there is somthing with the particular knife? Pobody's Nerfect.

Although we've had no negatives on the model.

Perhaps some metal shaving is stuck in the wrong place. You might "get a lupe" on it, as I tell the knifemakers in Golden factory. that means look at it closely under magnification (10X-15X).
