Problems with the Commander

When I recieved my commander I noticed that there was some play in the blade when it was open. I tightened the tension screw and got the blade to lock tighter but now the blade opens really stiff. Has anyone had the same problem or can offer some suggestions?

I had a similar problem with a new bead blast model. No matter How I tightened the pivot screw, the blade would rub. I was going to send it back to Emerson, but a friend decide he didn't care if the blade rubbed and took it off my hands.

My advice is to go ahead and return it to Emerson. Especially since to solve the problem, you need to tighten the pivot screw to the point the blade is hard to open.

I had that problem with one of my Ravens. I ended up tightening the pivot screw, and lubricating the action with some silicone to "loosen" it up a bit. Seemed to fix my problem (although the pivot screw loosens up a bit now and again). My Commander has no problems whatsoever, and neither does my other Raven. I would definately send your Commander back to Emerson and have them play with it a bit.

I had the same problem. As I stated in another post, I just put some locktite on the screw and adjusted the tension the way that I liked it and problem solved. I'm sure if you don't want to do this Emerson can fix your problem.

This is a little different issue but:

I work part time in a Knife Store and we have one Commader. Whenever the knife is opened with anything other than the gentlest thumb opening the lock engages so forcefully that a coin or key is needed to unlock it.

I am trying to convince the store manager to send this knife back to Emerson for repair before it is sold to a customer who will have to do so. He believes that this is inherent with all Emerson Commanders though.

It will break in, in a couple of weeks. A lot of knives are like this, in fact I'm suspicious if a knife does not lock up well. I've owned half a dozen production Emersons and two customs. When they come new they stick, but then they are easier to release yet still lock up tight.

Fenris,

Thanks for the information. I may have to keep it quiet until I can afford to buy the Commander for myself with an employee discount though.

I strongly recommend that if at all possible, anyone who buys a Commander should check it out in person if possible. Although they are all stiff when new, some are worse than others. I have had one for a while now and it is easily the smoothest non-custom knife i have ever handled. The only knives smoother I have ever handled were easily two or three times as expensive.
