Did the M9 Phrobis 111 Bayonet all come with a Dolphin on the Guard and Sheath??? Thanks for your help in advance... ITE

I have one of the early ones....I will have to dig it out from the basement. I honestly don't remember. These are nice knives and have only seen one or two at shows. Do you have one? When I get it out (may be after the weekend) I'll get a couple pics of it up.

Thanks Ed, yes I do have one... Got it in the small mother load in the second bag... and that fish caught my eye... I remember something about a 186 that a Dolphin on it and none of my 186s have any dolphins on them... Thanks again, ITE

The PHROBIS Dolphin was for sure on all the sheaths and Crossguards on the PHROBIS III variation...

Some trivia for ya.
The "Phrobis" name is from Navy SEAL Captain retired John Coulter.

I have a First Gen Prototype BuckMaster with the Phrobis dolphin. Look in my profile and it's in my pictures

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the link of your photo's. Can you post a photo of the Ti Ni 184?

Yes, the Buck manufactured Phrobis bayonets have the dolphin logo on the crossguard.

I have one of the early 186 titanium folders with the Phrobis dolphin on the scale. They made 50 of them before licensing the design to Buck.

Did the Phrobis 186 come with the thumb stud or did you add it yourself after manufacture? Thank you for the pics and info. Very interesting for me.

That thumb stud was an original component of the knife. From what Mickey Finn told me, when the design was licensed to Buck they didn't want any part of the thumb stud. I can't remember if it was Phrobis or Qual-A-Tec that marketed the studs, but they came in a small plastic case with the proper size Allen wrench for the set screw. I have one; I'll try to get some photos of it.

It is amazing seeing these photos and I was there at the time...Rich has been coming in lately showing all these old prototypes. Was a very interesting time. This was back in the mid-80's when we still were hesitant to put out a one handed knife. How times have changed.
