This question is for anyone who knows more then I do. So thats probably most of you guys.
Is BG-42 a Stronger steel for say prying metal then ATS-34 is?
Reason I ask is, I was recently prying a closed door. I had a BS Spearpoint in BG-42 and I snapped the tip off when I hit either the metal plate on the lock or a screw. I've done this kind of destructive **** with my old BS Tanto in AST-34 and it tore right through the door. Its just a hollow core door. Was is the tanto that did it or is ATS-34 a stronger steel? I mailed is back to Strider on saturday, hopefully they can fix it.

I think it a lot of it had to do with the tanto tip.

Don't know anything about the steels, but I'm curious too as how BG42 matches up with ATS, and vice versa.

But tantos are supposed to be a lot more beneficial for prying and hardcore tip bashing for some reason.
 
The difference you found between the two knives has to do with geometry. The Spearpoint version is still quite robust from what I have seen in pics. But the tip of the tanto still has more mass, and is less acute (less pointier width wise) than the spear point.
 
Prying with a folder is never a real good idea but can be done if needed. BG-42 is used in folders and smaller blades by Strider Knives, they find it is a better steal for the folders, like s30v but S30V is more of an all around steel.
The best Strider for prying applications would be a fixed blade, tanto point in ATS-34 steel.
BG-42 is a bit more brittle than the ATS-34. I have pryed numorous things open and off with my model BT. Its got a full 1/4 .25 ATS-34 all the way to the tip.

That being said I have used my GB Folder in S30V for prying. It came out fine, slightly scared but fine in working order.

The Buck/Striders may be a different story. It could be the combination of Spear Point/BG-42 that did it.
 
BG and ATS are equal.
It’s a weird thing…sometimes you can pound and pound on these things and NOT be able to hurt them.
Sometimes the damn thing will just break.

It pisses me off I have to admit.

For sure send it in. We’ll make it right.
