Question about SpeedSafe???

I just purchased a couple new knives from Kershaw. Ive played with a few Blur's and I really liked how the SpeedSafe flung the blade open almost like an automatic. So I got a Speed Bump and a Leek. They dont seem to open nearly as fast as the Blur. I was wondering if the mechanism can wear out over time or if they just arent built like the Blur? Should I send them back or is this normal? Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help!

Howdy mossy, I've got the Leek, Speed Bump and a few Blurs. :D The Bump isn't as fast out of the box as the Leek and Blurs, and I think that's the way they just are. Seems the larger the blade, the slower (if this is the term you want to use) the SpeedSafe is. While I haven't taken apart a ZT, I'm sure the torsion bar is bigger than one in the Speed Bump, and I'm sure it is much bigger than those in the Leeks. The Offset uses 2 bars, and they're there, most likely, due to the size of the blade. When new, they tend to be a little tight, and after some use, they will loosen up and fire faster and smoother. An option is to disassemble them (make sure the blade is open before removing the screws and pivot!), polish the PB washers with some flitz, and lube with Mil-tec or Hoppes or Break-Free. When you put them back together, use a very small (like just a coat on the end of a toothpick) dab of blue Locktite on the pivot screw, and once you get it adjusted where you want it, speed wise, centered, and no blade play/wobble, let it sit overnight. That'll give the Locktite time to set.

As for torsion bar wear, yes they can and do wear out. You can get replacement parts directly from Kershaw (see the sticky above) and do it yourself, or box it up with a note, and send it back. They'll even sharpen them for you while they're there. You can't beat Kershaw's Customer Service.

Welcome to the forums and I hope this helps...

I personally thought the leek was quicker than the mini cyclone AND much much easier to engage the speedsafe. The mini cyclone hurt my index finger every time i engaged the speedsafe...so i traded it.

I just found out that the Speed Bump is slower opening. I thought mine was on the slow side, so I replaced the torsion bar, and it's the same as before. It's fine the way it is, I mean, how fast does it really need to be? I guess I'm just used to the speed of the Needs Work, Leek, and Chive.

Anyway, Welcome mossyoakpenn! Lots of good info from nice folks here, enjoy.

1. That's a good way to look at it.
2. The speed of the opening is directly related to the blade size. The Chive is so fast it should be called an assisted-teleporting knife! The Boron Chive is ridiculously fast! My Boron leek is a close second though!
3. Thanks for that, but look out for this guy named Thomas W. He will break your heart. Just try asking for a Taboo...

Thanks a lot guys! There IS a LOT of good information on here that Ive been pouring over. Im lusting for more Kershaw's! My girlfriend is going to kill me. I dont know about that Thomas W guy...he seems to be making my wallet thinner and thinner and thinner.....
