Question about the Ken Onion Blackout

I got my Blackout 1 day after getting a Chive, both excellent knives, but I find the Blackout feels a little cheaper with the plastic handles and the slow opening but both have their good points.
My question is regarding the Blackout's lanyard hole. What should be there? Mine has a black metal plug that looks fine from the clip side but looks "broken off" from the other. It's almost impossible to see this in photos. Can this think be knocked out so that I can put a lanyard on it that's thicker than a thread? or is this something that is helping hold the handles together?
My first post on this fine forum, hoping to gather some good info. on my next purchase, I collect mostly small well made folders, things that could be useless in the field but could fit on a keychain. This Blackout is as big as I want to go. Mostly I like things about the size of my SOG Microdot. Just discovered Kershaw's 2 weeks ago, now I'm back in this hobby bigtime.

Hi Mark,

welcome to the forums. The lanyard hole there is actually a fastener that holds the scales together. Do not remove it. It looks strange but without it the knife would fall apart. I hope it helps...

Thanks for your advice, I'll leave it I don't want this to spring apart in my hand, these Kershaw's are incredibly sharp out of the box.

Hi Smeghead,

Welcome to the forums. The Kershaw Blackout is a fine knife. The fastner in the handle can have its hole enlarged. It will unscrew and the knife won't fly apart as long as the other two screws are in place. If you like small Kershaws look at the Scallion and Leek. Both designs are by Ken Onion and are fine examples of his speed safe.
