Is it wrong to use your knive as an intimidation tool? The only reason that I am asking is that a friend of mine recently got into "a little argument". As soon as the other guy saw my friend's Benchmade clipped to his back pocket, he backed out. Now my buddie takes his knive where ever he goes. And I think that he does this purely as an intimidation tool and nothing else. Any advice???
Thanks-

If you (or your friend) carry a knife for intimidation... you'd better be prepared to use it. Not everyone will back down.

You might want to post this in the general forum...

post it in the martial arts and tactical stuff forum, but to answer the question: some people have nothing to loose, and they will probably get more aggressive when they see your friend's knife. I would equate this to carrying a blank firing replica gun--he may scare off some people, but he may just get himself shot.

Intimidation is 90% of a physiological game but you better have the nerve and skill to back up that 10%

Yup, should be moved...but as long as we're here...

As soon as someone "threatens" me with a knife (or any other "deadly" weapon), they've just raised the ante on my response with a tangible threat to my very life, and the lives of others - and committed the felony of assault with a deadly weapon.

The first look anyone gets at my knife is their last look, and they won't get that look until they've forced the issue.

Beyond the legal and philosphical issues that displaying your knife raises, strategically, it also alerts your opponent to an advantage you hold, allowing them to react and neutralize that threat. There are very few, if any, good reasons to "brandish" your knife.
