question for Grizzly grinder owners...

i just got my grizzly set up the other day, and no matter what i do, i can't seem to get the sanding belt to line up on the contact wheel...it rides about 1/4" off the edge...

i've messed around with all the ways of adjusting it and i've concluded that the wheel on top needs to be closer (toward the motor), but it's at its limit in that direction...the only other option would be to maybe put in a washer and move the contact wheel a bit farther out...

but i don't feel like messing around too much more...so my question is: is having the sanding belt riding a little bit off the edge of the contact wheel a problem? does it need to be perfectly aligned? or can i get away with it being like it is?
 
I have one too. Is the belt tracking toward the motor or towar the outer edge? In ether case the tracking wheel assmbly may be the problem. My suggrstion is to losen the allen heads that keep that assembly from rotating(make the tension tight grab the knob and twist it right or left,be safe and dont let the belt pop of on ya. The only other fix is those allen adjusters in the base that true up the tracking wheel arm in relationship to the conyact wheel. I guess the easiest way to explain that, is the adjustments on the bottom control the plumbness of the top by as much as an 1/8th each way. By the way if you find your grizz runs to fast, it will... Rob frink of Beaumontmetal works sell a slow down wheel for about 90 bucks...Hes in here all the time. He also makes a kick butt grinder.I just upgraded from my first grinder(grizzly) to his KMG-1 with a bunch of other goodies, 8',12 contacts 5/6, 3/4, 1' small contacts and the flat platenNow that was like driving around a honda civic and suddenly finding yourself in a Viper...wow,wee I hope I helped let me know either way..... I had trouble with that at first. I adjusted the top wheel assembly. It not only goes up and down , but you can adjust it from side to side and that fixed my problem. Adjust it just a little and eventually the wheel wears down some and everything moves fine.
 
I also had to adjust the top tracking wheel to get the belt centered, then I had to crown both (8" and 10") wheels quite a bit to get them it to track smoother.
 
Hi Mark,

Some people have used electrical tape to put a crown on the top wheel of the GRIZ and have had good results.If you are heading down this way anytime soon,just put in the ride and bring it to the shop and we will get it going for you.
 
Take a file and round the edges of the wheel. A new contact wheel
has high spots on it on the corners and it will make the belt track
from one side to the other.I have knocked the corners of all my contact wheels and do not have the problem any more
 
thanks for the suggestions...i'm gonna have to fiddle with it some more i guess...

but it's not that the belt tracks from side to side...it stays pretty stable...the problem is that the wheels aren't quite lined up so that when it's centered on the top wheel, it's overhanging the edge on the contact wheel...i can use the tracking adjustment to pull it in, but then it overhangs on the top wheel...

from what i can tell, the adjustment i need in order to fix it is to get the top wheel farther to the left or the contact wheel farther to the right...but i can't move the top wheel any farther to the left (toward the motor) as it is already in as far as it will go...
 
I had Rob Frink make me a couple of heavy spacers. I used one behind the contact wheel to move it out into alignment with the top wheel. I think they were each 1/8 inch. It only took one.

What do you care if it is centered on the top wheel, you aren't gonnna grind on that. If you can control where it tracks on the contact wheel, and it stays there, that is all you need as far as I know.

Do you have a wheel flange (Griz.P/N: P1015089) mounted on either side of your contact wheel? I've left the inside one off before with similar results.
If you already have it in place, give Grizzly a shout and get another one to move your contact wheel out further to the right.

yeah i had the wheel flange on...i ended up adding a washer between the flange and the contact wheel...she's all runnin' hunky dorey now...
 
New guy question here...

I recently set up my Grizzly grinder also. I've found the same thing you did with the contact wheel and platen being right on but the upper idler wheel tracking off a little. Does this make any real difference? How will this affect my grinds? It would seem that the angular displacement between the upper portion of the platen and the lower portion would be so small that this problem would be academic. I guess I just don't see what the problem is...would sincerely appreciate an explanation so I know wether or not I need to correct this on my machine as well. Thanks! :)

i would think it wouldn't make a difference, as someone mentioned above...i'm just fussy about my tools...i like everything to line up or it gets on my nerves...

if you're having the same trouble, just pick up a big washer from home depot and slap it in between the wheel flange (motor side) and the contact wheel to push the contact wheel out a bit farther to the right...might take one or two washers...i put in one and it took care of everything...
 
I can definitely understand being fussy about your equipment, this bothered me too with my new Griz...I just wanted to understand if there was a mechanical reason. I appreciate the response. :) I'll be making a trip to Home Depot tomorrow for a couple of washers...and a couple of propane torches for my one brick forge! :D
