Question for R.A.T guys

For me I like to use this or nothing at all.

A machete makes sense. I have found that I like my RC3 a lot more than the 4. I sold both and am now getting a plain edge RC3. I don't like to keep knives that I don't use.

Yeah, but it'd be nice to have one with a GOOD fit and finish, maybe even made of something other than a blank stamped out of sheet metal.

Heck, if BRKT can sell a modified Ontario for $200, there's a market for a top quality machete.

True, true. I hear you. I might even be tempted to buy such a thing, though I don't believe the performance will be all that much better. There may be a market for such a thing. Just don't know if there's enough of a market.

It's really hard to find a good hunting/survival knife for under $20. It's not hard at all to find a good machete for under $20. I think that's the difference.

True, but once you have something that works, you end up wanting something NICE that works.

I mean if I stuck with what works, I'd never have gone past my Boy Scout Case knife, Buck 110, Estwing Sportman's hatchet and surplus machete.

I was just thinking. If the RAT guys most used stell in the jungle was a machete, then seems like they have used them enough to know what if any changes they might need.

Cmon, who wouldnt dig a RAT chete? Maybe even a pink one;)

If we were going to do a machete it would be made of un-coated steel with micarta handles and a convex edge. You can buy the "perfect" machete from Condor, IMO. Not micarta handles or un-coated steel but they're one of the best machetes I have ever used, especially the Latin model. There is no way we could get any better or cheaper than what Condor (Imacasa) is doing.

Aw come on. At least make them with pink G-10 handles.

Get the picture: A train of manly men headed out to survive in the jungle with thier trusty. . .PINK handled machetes and PINK Izulas about their necks.

Ah yes, the things of poetry.

Maybe add a pink coated RC-3 with lavendar G-10 scales. . .you aren't manly for going into the jungle, you manly for showing your face with your pink survival gear. :p

Well, I actually still use Estwing hatchets and axes, and a cheap machete, but I did upgrade the old BS knife to a SAK, and the Buck was replaced by a Spyderco Endura.

Machetes are realitively cheap and easy to mod. Here are the two that are in my rotation at this time. I took a 18" Ontario ant cut it down to 16" and convexed the edge. I wanted a slight recurve to the blade aswell. I call it my Ramboised chete. The other is my Kabar cutless machete. It is about 12". I stripped it, knocked the shoulder of the grind down, and convexed the edge. It chops like crazy. I use the kabar the most, as Colorado does not have the folage of the jungle. Both of them cost about 60, together. The kabar is 1085 and the ontario is 1095. both are said to have around 54RC.

This is a pic of my new BHK bushcrafter. Very light and comfortably handled knife. Haven't had a chance to really abuse her yet.

For fun I threw in a pic of a scandi style blade I made. Stacked oak handles, dome forging scale left on, with a convex edge.

I thought it looked kind of funny with king of the hill in the back ground.

My Buck 110 never leaves my side while deer hunting. And my Estwing hatches still sees plenty of use during camping and wood cutting. My problem is I bounce back and forth with my fixed blade.

Not a lot of folks can justify spending a lot of money on a fancy, well finished machete with micarta when they can get one just as servicable for $15.
