I have a couple of older Odyssee knives on layaway and have a question about one of them. One is a 2001 and the other is I believe a 2002. My question is; the 01 has a straight blade with an open back, the 02 has the same blade but with a solid back. Does anyone know if this was the norm for this year? I was going to pick them up today but got sent to Atlanta again. I will post pictures as soon as I get back and have them.

I'm not exactly sure what your talking about without pictures. I looked at the '01 and '02 catalogs and they look alike. I have a few of these knives and still couldn't tell what your talking about ie open back and closed back. I picked up the carbon fiber Odyssee a few months back and put it away here is a picture...

Mitch, my 1998 prototype 182U Odyssee as a solid back... I didn't take any pics of the backbone, but here's some pics of my Odyssee knife... In the 1998-99 Catalog it said that the Odyssee ll 182FL came with a Metal Backbone for stability... ITE ...

The odyssey had three model numbers that I am aware of
181 with ATS34 steel
182 with ATS34 steel and carbon fiber scales
These two models( at least the ones I've seen) have solid backs
186 with 420HC steel : this model (again the one I've seen) has an open back built with stand off spacers.
I think the idea being that with an open back, less lint build up inside.
You will need to check the tang stamp to verify which model you are getting.
They are all very well built and durable tools. I have carried the Odyssey for about 15 years and have one
that is on it's third blade!
Grab em while you can and enjoy
