Question on #ed Collector Swicks ... (for Sal or Kristi)

Hi Sal / Kristi,

Just curious about what I'm hearing regarding the Swick. If I'm understanding Spyderknut's post (attached below), Ruth is apparently telling folks that there will be no numbered Swicks for the "no-variation" collector program. I always sort of thought that a new model number plus a new model name yielded at least one numbered knife for all the active collectors.

Obviously, I can pick one up somewhere, but I sure would like one with my number.

I recently posed this same question to Ruth Durant with Spyderco sales department. She is now in charge of the collector's program. She stated the Swick was a "variation". I guess of the Spot. I really do not understand this. I think this is rubbish! I mean, it has a new model number and everything! I think the S30V version is a sprint run and we may get a collector version of the regular production model when it comes out.

Kristi responded to my query.

As for the Swick and production, it still hasn't been decided if it will have a full production. The Sprint Run was done as a test to see if the market wants a production run. We'll announce it one way or the other once it's been determined.

Looks like we have to wait for this decision before we know whether we will get a collector piece.

I assume those that choose to receive all variants got one. Anyone?

Regarding my inquiry to the possiblility of a sprint run option for collectors who do not get all variants:

I can't promise that we can do that option, but I can promise that we will revisit the issue and discuss it further once all the appropriate people are back in the office, first and foremost, Sal. I'll have it added to an agenda for the next product meeting. I'll be honest though, it'll take time. There are a lot of logistics that would have to be put in to place to make it work and we have to determine if we can handle those logistics without sacrificing other things.

I as an all variant collector have not received it as of yet...which proves nothing really as I haven't received any variant since mid January....there apparently was a bottle neck in engraving. :)

This still leaves me confused. New model number + new name = new knife in my book. Production vs sprint run normally doesn't make a difference with regard to the collector program. I guess I've gotta go shop for this one, or will it show up on my doorstep in two weeks?

Well they sold out first batch fairly quick, but New Graham has some in now (just checked)...don't know about any other Finer Blade Stores everywhere.:p

I think it is worth the trouble to get one. I've worn mine daily for months.

Knifecenter had them as well, at least a few weeks ago they did.

I really hope this knife goes full production. As some of know, I pushed hard for this knife (and was blessed by Sal with 1 of 5 Concept models for testing :D), and I've made my opinions very clear about the SWICK on these forums. For those that missed it, the SWICK is the BEST neck knife I've owned, and I've owned several. Hell, eventhough I already had my concept model, I bought one of the sprint-run blades, too. Since my concept version received NO DAMAGE during my testing (only a slight touch-up on the edge), it has now been retired to my collector's drawer.

Kristi wrote back and confirmed that the Swick is indeed officially considered a variation of the SPOT. She agreed to post more on this later after she gets a chance to talk to Sal, but "variation" status does not necessarily equate to what I previously understood (i.e. new model number + new model name = new model). "Variation" vs "New Model" status is decided on a case by case basis.

In any case I started shopping around for a Swick last night and it seems that it does not come with a neck chain like my Ronin and SPOT did. I'm sort of surprised by that. Anybody got suggestions on a good break-away chain?
