All:

I am looking into buying a Canoe. I like Case, but I want this to be a non-Case knife. I am looking at a Northwoods Canoe, Queen Canoe, and a Colonel Coon Canoe. Anyone have any comments on these in particular? Or, can anyone comment on Colonel Coon knives in general? I think they are made by Queen.

Thanks in advance.

As it happens I just received a Queen canoe in bird's eye maple today. A beautiful well made knife that came reasonably sharp OOB. The only (minor) gripe I have is that the backspring feels a bit soft to me, but I like stronger springs anyways so.... But very nice f&f and the D2 steel is a plus for me.

+1 on the Cozy Glen. I believe their carbon is 1095, which is even better than Case CV. I don't own one, but do own many Queen made knives and they are all very nice. The Cozys I've seen are gorgeous.

The only canoe I have is the Queen city cozy glen and it's real nice. It rides surprisingly slim in the pocket too. 1095 blades are easy to sharpen and patinas are always nice.

All the info that I have found on the current Colonel Coon knives indicates they most are made by Queen but I think recently some patterns might be coming from Bear & Sons. They all seem to share "440 Stainless" steel blades, which is probably 440A.

When you purchase knives that are Brand only knives made by a Contractor often you are paying quite a bit extra for the "name" but you rarely see extra quality for that increased cost. Just my $.02

With that said, I do not own a CC so I can not vouch firsthand for the quality.

Well said. It's my only canoe as well and one of my favorites.

Cozy glen. I couldn't agree more. The blades on this thing have a nice blue to them and it's tight as a drum.

Cozy Glen in 1095 is slimmer than the Queen in D2

The main 1095 blade is thinner then the D2
The Queen D2 is much stouter

Quality very similar

The main blade has this grey patina that takes a long time to arrive

You might also spend some time surfing on eBay, I wasn't looking for a canoe when this AG Russell caught my eye. Some of the best stag I own and it was a great deal to boot...sometimes you get lucky.

Picked this up in the bay and have been using it as much as I can, especially on foods.:)

It is hard to go wrong with any Queen knife and I believe that the Canoe pattern is the best of the Queens. Sadly, it seems that Queen is de-emphasizing this pattern, with only the Amber Carved Stag Bone version being currently offered. That is OK, since this pattern is very attractive and "pocket- and hand-friendly" when it is handled in bone. Even so, I am glad to have my BEM version. I just wish that I had had the presence of mind to buy cocobolo and delrin versions while I had the chance.

I really like the look of maple wood overall. The first real quality drumset I bought is in maple with a sort of black brown finish. Goes nicely with my canoe, although it is hard to find a context to use them both together :D

I recently picked up a Canoe pattern knife made by Rodgers/ Wostenholm, U.K., for Parker-Frost. It's an older model, but I'm impressed with the quality. I don't know what grade of steel is used though.

I like the look of the Queen Canoe pattern you've got Navihawk! Another one for my wish list!

I really like the Canoe pattern that Queen produces, especially all the Cozy Glen SFOs mentioned. These are really nice slicers. I would also highly recommend!:D
